Brand New Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens F4.5-5.6 L Mark II Mk 2
28. Mai 2016
Excellent lens, major upgrade from Mark I
I had the old version of the 100-400 and decided to upgrade for a few reasons. The stabilizer wasn't very effective, and using it on my Canon 7D meant that it was only really functional in very good light. Obviously this isn't a lens meant for low light, but it was still surprising how limited I was. Also, It wasn't a very sharp lens, and often produced pretty harsh bokeh. Ok enough about the old one! The new lens is better in every way. The bokeh is noticeably better, smoother and gentler. The stabilizer is MUCH better. I've taken sharp shots handheld at 400mm at 1/15 seconds. At that shutter speed, maybe 1 in 5 are keepers, but it's pretty easy to snap 5 in a row and get a sharp shot. The extra stabilizer mode helps. I never use 2 to be honest, but I do now use Mode 3 when shooting birds in flight or other moving subjects. The lens is definitely sharper than the previous version. Tiny detail is resolved well. The twist zoom doesn't bother me. I kind of liked the old push-pull because it was very fast to go to 400, but the new one is fine. People say you have you twist way more than you should on the new one, but it's never been an issue for me, I've never missed a shot because of it. Also, the less you twist, the more mechanical pressure you're putting on the parts. The less it twists the less stress on the lens, so I think it's fine. The weight doesn't bother me. It is noticeably a bit heavier than the Mark I but I don't mind. The zoom tightness control ring is also much better as it hits the edge on either side so you know when it's fully loose or fully tight, you don't have to crank it hard hoping you've tightened it fully. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The price is high but you get what you pay for. I did a lot of researching, and thought about other similar lenses (mostly 3rd party) but in the end I'm really glad this is what I got. You won't be disappointed.
