This is a fantastic game, I just don't like it. ;)
When reading reviews for any product, it's always important to consider the point of view of the author and how that may affect their assessment of the product. I figure the same is true when writing reviews, so I wanted to make sure that people knew my reasons for not liking the game. I am 39 years old, and only bought a Nintendo DS about a month ago. I knew from the time I first saw one that most of the software was not going to be aimed at people of my age or gaming habits. Still, there were a few titles that caught my interest. Most of these were updates of classic arcade titles, or new compilations of arcade classics that either offered different titles than previous ones for the GameBoy Advance or just better emulation. In the case of Dig Dug - Digging Strike, it was definitely apparent that the title was aimed at younger players, but I couldn't resist giving it a try. Essentially the game is the original Dig Dug on the lower screen played simultaneously with Dig Dug II on the upper screen. The concept itself is a completely natural evolution for this game, although it had been touched on with the PC title Dig Dug Deeper, where you can at least surface in order to catch that last Pooka or Fygar that always runs away. I'm pretty sure the multiplayer mode might let you jump right in and have an arcade-style battle, but the Story mode is very nice as well. I'm a fan of most things Japanese, but not RPGs, so getting a nice RPG-style Story Mode in a game that's more suited to my tastes was a nice bonus. Even so, I just found the multitasking that was required in order to effectively play the game was more than I was willing to commit to. Even though I like Dig Dug II, the switch to drilling rather than digging was an unwelcome adjustment for me. In this game, having to dig very methodically in order to facilitate the "drilling" (actually just pre-set spikes that fall as you dig under them) on the surface just made the whole process too much of a chore for my tastes. As I said before, I think the concept is great, and it's a very rich gaming experience for anyone who's serious about learning to play a game and has the time to do so (i.e. kids and hardcore gamers). For me, I just want a short-term enemy-blasting joyride. For this reason, I highly recommend the game to fans of the Dig Dug and Mr. Driller franchises (you'll find out in the opening sequence how they are related... I won't spoil it here), but not necessarily for anyone who just wants to play the original games. Namco Museum DS is a great option for fans of Dig Dug II, and Namco Museum for the GameBoy Advance is great for the original game. Thanks for reading, and I hope my own personal bias against the game won't deter anyone who thinks they may enjoy it from giving it a try. I just wouldn't spend a lot of money on it if you're only buying it for the name Dig Dug.

Game music ain't what it used to be...
I have to laugh at the "Best of Video Game Music" line on the cover, or even any suggestion that this is in any way "video game music" at all. Okay, I get it, this music WAS featured in various video games... they're even listed under each song on the back. Still, this CD should have been called "Music That Just Happens To Be In Video Games" or something similar. This is not video game "score" music, or anything specifically created for a video game. These are just alternative and rap tracks that were included in certain video games, either because of some deal between the game developer/publisher and the record label, or simply because someone somewhere knew that the segment of the population likely to be playing the game would enjoy this type of music. I have to say that if you DO have the games represented here, and you are somehow reminded of the game when you hear the tracks on this CD, it does fulfill its purpose. However, if you are simply a fan of game music (that is, music created SPECIFICALLY for a particular game), then pass this one by. As the other reviewer pointed out, this CD is NOT for kids. There is liberal use of "MF" and the 'N' word throughout a few of the tracks, so I'm really surprised it doesn't have an "Explicit Lyrics" logo on the cover. I'll admit I'm having a hard time letting go of the CD because it is very much associated with video games, but I don't play any of the games these tracks are featured in, and I don't really like any of the music, with the possible exception of the Elvis vs. JunkieXL track. At least with other compilations of "hit" music that just happens to be included in a video game (Wipeout XL, for example), there is at least some "score" music mixed in that was created for the game. If you absolutely must have any CD that's even remotely connected to a video game (and I'm starting to find myself slipping into that category), go ahead. However, if you're looking for something that even remotely sounds like true "game music", stay away... FAR away.

Adequate, nothing more.
This compilation is nothing special, not even considering what Priority Records usually offers. If you need these songs, there are probably loads of other sources for them, but if the track list covers several tracks that you would like to have, I guess it's adequate. No major complaints, but I plan to replace it as soon as I have found these tracks on other compilations.
