I had the blues but I shook them loose.
The strength of this album can best be summed up by the fact that after previewing the album on Spotify I thought it had enough good tunes to loosen my purse strings and persuade me to buy a physical copy of the album. Some time has past since I sampled the music of Bombay Bicycle Club but after putting on the Cd I was immediately reminded exactly why i like this band. A sense of optimism pervades through the entire album both musically and lyrically aiding support to the notion that there really couldn't have been a more apt title for the album than 'I had the blues but I shook them loose' as each track is imbued with a sense of learning from the past and heading forward with a positive outlook. On a musical level the band play to their strengths, never overplaying but every instrument taking a slightly off centre stance on the norm at all times. The singers voice though conventionally quite weak is very distinctive with bags of character, supported by swells and surges in the musicality to provide dynamic and sonic variety to the songs. Stand out tracks come in the form of Always like this, Dust on the ground, Evening/Morning and Magnet which are enough to warrant a purchase in themselves though more reserved gems such as What if and The Hill more than hold their own. As a whole the album is cohesive and charming and being a debut is a clear indicator of great things to come. Ones to watch.
