Phone get a 2.5, Windows OS gets a 3.5
Wow...I finally have a Windows Phone device! I have been wanting one for quite some time to see just how it stacks up to the Android and iOS juggernauts. But first, a word about the HTC Surround 7, yuck! I guess it's my fault for not really knowing what I was getting. The phone is very average in all facets save one (the stock battery is horrible). The build quality is okay but the phone feels slick in the hand and without a case I would probably drop it constantly; I do have large hands. The slide out speaker gives slightly better than average sound but overall it's an unnecessary contributor to the phone's bulkiness. Mind you, this is a small phone by today's 4.7-4.9 inch standards (that's 11.9-12.4 centimeters for those outside the US). The addition of a dedicated camera button is not bad, but it seemed somewhat unresponsive at times. As for the camera itself, photos are on the blurry side even when you swear you didn't move...always take an extra snap or two to be safe. Call quality was okay, but that should be expected of every phone. A little challenging getting the back cover off yet everything (battery, sim card slot) was easily accessible once removed. You will have to remove the battery to pop the sim card in and out. Overall I give this a 2.5 out of 5. A quick note about Windows Phone (since version 8 is on the horizon) its not bad. Although I've felt much more fluid with Android, the 7.5 Mango version of Windows Phone has some nice features. That colorful start screen is actually very useful the way it updates tile information. The Xbox Live integration is awesome! I would not say I'm ready to jump ship from my Nexus device, but I do not feel as though it is a bad experience; just slightly less polished.

Great phone with one, okay two weaknesses
Like many others, I use my phone for more than just calls. Lately, I've been searching for a good combination form, function, and value. Since I don't want to continue the two year contract merry-go-round with my cell carrier, I choose to look to Ebay to find my diamond in the rough. The Blackberry 8530 truly is a diamond, unfortunately its two weaknesses lead me to realize my search is not over. Don't get me wrong, I love pretty much every aspect of this phone. The qwerty keyboard, love it. I have large hands and for many years thought the small qwerty keyboard would be too much of an obstacle, I was wrong. The App Store, love it. The number of available apps doesn't matter, the number of non-sucking apps do! The video capabilities, love it. Never thought I would be able to watch good looking video on such a small screen, again I was wrong. WiFi, love it. I'm on Sprint so all I can say is it's about time. Assignable buttons, love it, I mean it's my phone right, let me mold it the way I want! Battery life, awesome! So nice to have a smart phone that isn't stupid when it comes to power usage. Standby time does not mean drain the juice as fast as you can, this phone can hold a charge. With all that said, there are two glaring weaknesses. For some reason, I haven't figured it out yet, Rim felt removing the camera flash was a good idea, NOT! Like all other BB's in this form factor, although you may have 3G or 4G, navigating the web on this device still sucks!!! The screen is just too small for a rich web experience. Maybe one day there will be a light, thin, slider BB that offers a qwerty keyboard, larger screen, and all the goodness of a real BB, no the Storm is not the answer. If these two features or rather disabilities don't bother you, then run don't walk and pick up this phone!
