Competent but getting a little long in the tooth
I bought an HP Pavilion for use as a "coffee table" computer, that is to have something handy whenever I need to Google something or check email. This computer fills that role nicely. The keyboard is large and comfortable to type on, and screen is bright and clear. I don't know how well this computer would work for other applications, the video seems a little slow. It works OK for viewing YouTube clips, streaming Pandora, or watching a movie from Netflix, but I'd hesitate to use it for gaming or other graphics-intensive jobs. MS Office runs fine, but Adobe Photoshop is very slow to load and refresh. As an added bonus, it came with software that allows it to play DVDs without the operating system being fully on. You can just turn it on, insert a disc and the player interface will open. It also came with a small remote control that stows in a slot. Sound is reasonable for a notebook, but you'll probably want to listen via headphones rather than the tinny little speakers. I've had a few problems with the computer over the past several years. I made the mistake of trying to install Vista on it last year and had to revert back to Windows XP. It just wasn't up to the task, particularly with the "deluxe" user interface turned on. I also had a problem with the on-board wireless working intermittently and I had gone so far as to install a USB wireless NIC. I was convinced that the chip was bad. I started having the same problems in Vista, but when I went back to Win XP, everything worked fine. The on-board wireless seems to have fixed itself. I think that it may have been a driver issue. The weakest aspect of this computer is the way that the screen is attached. I started noticing small bulges about an inch above the hinges on the top cover. Over time these developed into cracks that spread across the face of cover. They eventually got so bad that the screen would wobble several inches when opened (very annoying). I was so fed-up with it that I purchased a dead notebook to cannibalize for parts. I've experienced similar problems with other notebooks, but because the screen is so large and heavy it seemed more pronounced with this computer. Speaking of size, this thing is a monster. I use it as a relatively stationary but portable computer in my home. I couldn't imagine lugging this back and forth to school or work everyday. I don't really know how long the battery lasts, the longest I've ever had it unplugged was probably two hours. Overall I'd give this computer a slightly above average rating. It does a few things pretty well, but most things adequately. For ~$100 used, you could do a lot worse. If you need a second (or third) computer to carry out easy tasks, then this could be your ticket. The DVD functionality and built-in S-video out make it a great companion for road trips. Ebay only allows ratings on a 5-point scale. This machine definitely doesn't rate four stars, but neither does it deserve three. For an older computer trying to keep up, I'd give it a solid 3.5 stars. If you're buying one used (I'm sure they're all used now), make sure that the top cover is not cracked.
