Trevor Pinnock, W.a. Mozart - Symphonies [New CD] Boxed Set
27. Feb 2018
Pinnock's 1992-94 Mozart Symphonies
Trevor Pinnock (b. 1946) conducted this complete cycle of the Mozart Symphonies with the English Concert from 1992 to 1994, no small feat. The results are the best played and recorded Mozart Symphony cycle on period instruments. to the present time (February 27, 2018). The strings have a soft and silvery tone, horns and wood winds are full throated and raspy. Unless you are totally turned off by period instruments, this is a good investment. Pinnock's Mozart Symphonies 1-30, 32, 36, 38, 39 are all included in the 2016 Mozart 225 edition (DG and Decca recordings, 200 CDs), which is a great investment. But Symphonies 31, 33, 34, 35, 40 and 41 are NOT by Pinnock, but by other period instrument orchestras/conductors. There is a 11 CD cycle of Mozart Symphonies by Jaap ter Linden and Mozart Academy of Amsterdam (Brilliant Classics, recorded 2001-02) which is generally quite good, but Pinnock is more assured and confident sounding. Ter Linden's strings sound undernourished at times, and his horns can be sour and out of tune. No such problems with the English Concert! My recommendation is Pinnock.
Thomas Beecham, Sir Beecham Thomas - Byways of Beecham [New CD] Jewel Case Packa
08. Mär 2018
Beecham' s only recording of the Saint Säens "Organ" Symphony
Sir Thomas Beecham (1879-1961) recorded other shorter Saint Säens works: Rouet d'Omphale, Bacchanale and Dance of the Priestesses from "Samson et Dalila" more than one time, but the "Organ" Symphony only this one time. The sound is mono from the mid 1950s and very clear but not audiophile quality by any means! If you must have even stereo or digital sound, avoid this. This disc is good value to the dollar, but recommended mainly to Beecham's fans.
Rafael Kubelik : Bedrich Smetana Ma Vlast - My Fatherland CD (2000)
26. Sep 2018
Kubelik's 2nd Ma Vlast recording, 1959
Rafael Kubelik (1914-1996) recorded Smetana's Czech nationalist tone poem cycle "Ma Vlast" (My Fatherland) 5 times: Chicago Symphony (Mercury, 1951); Vienna Philharmonic (Decca, 1959: this one); Boston Symphony (Deutsche Grammophon, 1971); Bavarian Radio Orchestra (Orfeo, 1984); and Czech Philharmonic (Supraphon, 1990). Some listeners are loyal to one or another Kubelik recording but I like them all for varying reasons. This Vienna recording was the first in stereo, and I begins cautiously but soon builds up steam, and the entire recording is very good. Without going into detail, let me add Kubelik's Vienna Ma Vlast is well worth acquiring, as are the others. Highly recommended for performance and sound. Five stars!
