Leica-R Summicron 50mm f2
This is a truly outstanding lens - so sharp that it makes much more expensive lenses feel like cheap zoom alternatives. I mounted it on a Canon 5D Mk II via an adapter and compared to my Canon 24-105L and the Canon 50 f1.4. It really shames the former (partly, but not totally, predictable, given that it is a prime-versus-zoom comparison, but the 24-105 is an L lens and 50mm is towards the middle of its zoom range, so performance is near its peak). With regard to the latter, the difference in quality is smaller but still there: the Leica is sharp from edge to edge and appears to provide fuller, more vivid and detailed images. I was astounded by the results and have become far less dependent on my 28-105 since I started using the Summicron. I know how daunting it may appear to a generation of photographers schooled in AF lenses and a lens system to try different makes and manually focused lenses. Believe me, it is a steep learning curve but puts some more fun into photography. There is something far more organic about focusing manually, about understanding depth-of-field in action, and about seeing the result afterwards. There are many adapters for Leica-R lenses suitable for most manufacturers of DSLRs; they are reasonably priced and open up a wholly new world for you. Try it - the difference in quality will amaze you
