A great edition to the Master Keaton series, well forth the find!
This volume was by far the hardest to find. When I first got into the series I was able to obtain the volumes at $4.00 a piece new from RightStuf.com, but I only decided to get the first four, thinking I would only give the series a try. What a mistake that was, as I immediately loved the anime. After searching high and low for this volume at a reasonable price (it is very hard to find as they series is out of print here and copies can be pretty expensive, new or used...but I see some used now...better grab them soon!), I am reminded of how much I enjoy it. Master Keaton is a series about Taichi Hiraga-Keaton, an archaeologist, insurance agent, and survival master. He is a bit of a detective too. I enjoyed the series at first because it put me in the mind of watching one of my favorite detectives when he is older (Conan Edogawa/Shinichi Kudo of Detective Conan/Case Closed fame). The format is episodic, as in each episode our protagonist is tackling a new issue. The pace can be slow or fast; I suppose that is how life is and why the series has such a charm. Even though the Master gets into varied circumstances, they can be looked upon as almost believable. On this DVD in particular the episodes are good, but you will not find very much suspense. There is a lot of history, flashbacks, and detail on personal relationships. However, in each Keaton's character is revealed more and more and the viewer is able to see just how good he is at what he does. I have only watched the episodes in Japanese with subtitles thus far, but with my knowledge of the other volumes, I would think that the dub is well done as well. Seeing that a lot of the story takes place in England and other countries, the voice actors generally did a nice job of the accents; this is one way that the dub can actually shine over the original. Still, I personally prefer the original, but in this case its only because I have a tendency to enjoy the Japanese voice acting more. Either way you watch it, it is done great. All in all, though it took me forever to get this volume and I now feel comfortable moving on to 6-8, I am glad I purchased this and I think people of varied taste will enjoy this as well. You may even learn something from it!

A very good movie and great view of Mamoru Oshii's early work.
It is both a pity and a great thing that this Limited Collector's Edition is available for so little now. I suspect that many people are not really into Patlabor. I've known of the series for over 10 years, but have never watched it. It seems to be one of those series that people hear about but that have not attracted as much attention here in the States. So when these Limited Collector's Editions came out at a high price, many people probably ignored them. And its a shame; because they really give you your money's worth with the bonus material. But I won't complain, as I bought it for less than $20.00. :) I advise anyone else even remotely interested to give it a try while prices are low and inventory is in great supply. This movie is pretty solid, but its not perfect. Although I am sure it helps to know the characters from the TV and OAV series, I think that most of them are given enough time to give the audience an idea of who they are. I have still not seen anything else in the series and was given a general idea, so the movie itself can stand alone well. There are only a few characters who stand on the margins and are given little time. But that somewhat makes me curious and want to go watch the series. The music and animation are very well done. It's good for its time, which was a good time for Japanese animation anyway. The plot moves along nicely, but I do think there are some holes that could have been filled in. I felt that the ending was a little anti-climatic. I also would have liked to see more given in terms of the antagonist's motivation. Those are my only two gripes. All in all, I think that there was a good balance of action and story. In terms of presentation the menus are well done. I have only watched it with the Japanese audio, so I cannot judge the English dub. However, on the few instances that I wanted to compare the English, it sounded well enough and the lines did not seem too different from what was said originally; the same ideas were conveyed. In the end, I think that this is a movie that would appeal to the average viewer of Japanese animation. It is good to see the style of direction from Mamoru Oshii, who would later go on to do the famous Ghost in the Shell. It's worth a view. I still have a bit of bonus material to go back and watch too.

Sony's PS2 Slim... Sure winner? Or Fat chance?
Sony's PlayStation line of video game consoles has always been a winner in my eyes. I obtained my PlayStation 2 early on in its release. Years later, I saw that they had made a slim version of the system. The design looked nice, but I had never seen in it person. I never thought I'd have need for buying one either. That is, until now. Once again, as far as the design goes it is done very well. Form and function go hand and hand. One advantage to the new model is that the lens is accessible from the top. The very reason I bought this newer one is because my older one was having problems reading one certain disc, and I couldn't access the lens to try to clean it. I could not send it in for service, since it is a Japanese system and I am in the North America, and I dared not open it up myself to attempt repairing it. Hopefully I'll never have to worry about this again with the new model, but if I suspect the lens to be a problem in years to come, I can more easily do something about it. The system takes up a lot less space, period. I was really amazed by the size when I opened the package; it is much smaller than I thought. It is very lightweight as well. This means that wherever you sit it, you need to be sure that it will not be prone to falling or getting stepped on, as I can only imagine how fragile it must be. At the same time, it means that it is more portable (with great care of course) and can fit in more easily into your entertainment environment. There are some features that are gone, most notably the expansion bay. This means that one cannot use the internal hard disk drive. However, I don't know many people that mind this. Also, a port for internet connection is directly on the body of the unit now. All in all I think that Sony has done well with the Playstation 2 Slim. I have yet to experience any problems with it. And hopefully, I never will.
