The North Face Women's Recon Backpack CE85S63 red / burgundy / black / gray
16. Dez 2015
So close to perfect....
This backpack is comfy, with pockets of just the right size arranged very intuitively, so my stuff stays organized so easily! However, there are some details that I definitely would want changed:
1. The zippered pocket in the organizer panel should zip in the opposite direction -- so that it'd match the little cell phone / sunglasses pocket in the front. This is important because when you are wearing the backpack on one shoulder while reaching in to get things from various compartments, having zippers that all open in the same direction reduces much of the awkwardness and confusion.
2. The buckle that secures the front mesh pocket is hard to operate. I wish the top half of the buckle were fastened to the bag with a looped strap rather than effectively bolted right to the fabric of the bag. As it is, the top half of the buckle is stationary, with no give at all, meaning that you have to bring the bottom half up to meet it. Because the buckle is small, there's little room to get a good grip as you try to push the pieces together. This buckle will probably be a nightmare to operate in the winter when I'm wearing gloves or mittens. Thankfully, leaving the pocket unbuckled doesn't really affect the performance of the bag -- or even the security of the contents of the front pocket.
3. As a righty, I feel that the sternum strap should go from right to left. All my other backpacks have been this way. Maybe this backpack has a left-to-right sternum strap because it's women-specific...? Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if I can flip the strap around without risking breaking the attachment pieces.
4. The compression straps should tighten in the opposite direction -- so that when you're wearing the backpack, you'd reach back for the straps and pull them _forward_ to tighten them.
Everything else about this backpack is just about perfect -- the dimensions, the fit (I'm female, 5'4", average build), the craftsmanship, the looks, the details that do make this pack so great, including:
1. The organizer panel -- it has a clear layout with a plenty of compartments of different dimensions. These compartments are all on the top two-thirds of the panel, meaning that (1) your essentials are within easy reach and (2) the large zippered compartment that houses the panel still has room at the bottom for larger or less frequently used items.
2. The stretchy panel in the main compartment: it's designed to house a laptop or hydration pouch, but it's also perfect for keeping your letter-size documents flat and unwrinkled!
3. The shoulder straps and the back panel are well padded and sit flat against my body, so the load I'm carrying feels balanced and supported -- and less burdensome!
