I bought this GPS as a Christmas present for my girlfriend. She loves hillwalking in Scotland so I thought this would help her plan routes etc. I've only tried it a couple of times but it's got all the usual Garmin features and has an electronic compass which I find useful on my GPS76CSx - used extensively on my boat. Having the Topo maps loaded is very useful although I've also bought the cd so that she can plan routes on computer then transfer them to the unit. The device is quite small, maybe the screen is a bit too small so there's quite a bit of zooming/panning to do sometimes. The satellite accuracy to within about 20 ft is impressive and correct, I measured it against a known landmark. Overall I like this product, I hope she does too!
I bought this as an up-grade from my existing Etrex H as I wanted street level mapping for city walking and cycle guidance. It is much more sophisticated than the Etrex H, but no more accurate. I'm not sure why the WAAS/EGNOS is not enabled by default as it increases the accuracy considerably. It took me a while to find out how to download maps from OpenStreetMap as the instructions were not very clear. I eventually got UK maps from TalkyToaster which are very good. It is a tremendous piece of kit for not much money, but the interface is not exactly intuitive and the manual is rubbish. I recently used this device to point my way around a 25 mile charity challenge and I reckon it saved an hour over map reading. I do like it, but on reflection, perhaps I would have better served buying a Garmin GPSMAP 62 which has better controls and a much bigger screen. I guess you get what you pay for - and I probably will purchase one of these next year. I'm likely to buy another Garmin because they are the standard format for most gps and tracks/routes are available on many websites - many at no cost. I use a combination of Google Maps to draw tracks, GPS Babel to convert the tracks to .gpx and EasyGPS to send the tracks to the device. Getting the best out of a walking gps is much more demanding than a car unit, but then again it is much more rewarding. In summary: a good device and ideal if you've never used gps for walking before. However, it is limited by a small screen and fiddly controls.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is a lovely little GPS device. It is easy in the hand and easy to use. I needed to upgrade the maps to topo GB as the maps that come on the memory are not good for trekking which is why i bought the device. I took out in the snow and the device kept shutting down the other day but the temp was below -2 ! I have done numerous walks with the device without any trouble. Compared with the competitions prices I am happy with this GPS. However i wish I could upload customizable maps onto it like you can on the more expensive units but you can't have everything. Overall - very good.
I bought this to replace a faulty Legend C that I bought for £20 a few months ago as my first GPS. I don't recall what the fault was with the Legend C, but it didn't work well under tree coverage. The HCx fixed that, so to that extent it was all I wanted. The additional memory card means that it has contour maps of the whole of the UK, another huge benefit. So far, I've used it only along the local paths that I know like the back of my hand, so it hasn't faced any challenges, but it has worked well there (at least I know that it's telling me the truth, as I know where I am). I'll enjoy using it in unfamiliar territory in future.
We bought this to replace a unit which I lost. We are very pleasd with the facility to load routes, either our own or those posted by other walkers.
