I have wanted this cd for a long time and was thrilled to find it for a reasonable price on e-bay. Considering improvements in sound technology since the recording of "No Strings" in 1962, I find the sound to be amazingly good. I actually saw the Broadway show when it first came out and loved it, although the critics were not so kind. This was Richard Rodgers' only musical after Oscar Hammerstein died, and he wrote both the music and the lyrics. Although the lyrics don't have Hammerstein's magic, I still think Rodgers did an great job. Knowing the story helps. A disillusioned American writer (Richard Kiley) goes to Paris to try to get his muse back. There he meets a beautiful African-American fashion model (Diahann Carroll), who is in Paris because, in 1960s America, black models were not accepted, yet in Paris, she was a fashion star. Inevitably, the two fall in love, against the backdrop of Parisian nightlife and haute couture. But eventually the writer wants to return to the U.S., and to his quiet life in Maine to write. The model knows the on-going discrimination she would face if she ever returned, so, although they love each other, they agree to part with "No Strings" attached. Anyone who likes Broadway show music would love this album. Its most famous song is "The Sweetest Sounds," but I prefer "Nobody Told Me" about how love can hit you like a thunderbolt, and "You Don't Tell Me", which was a real women's lib song way before its time! Although this is a little-known musical and album, I can highly recommend it!Vollständige Rezension lesen
