There have been very few video games using the Templar Knights as main characters, so Knights of the Temple is at least notable for two reasons. The second reason for taking note of the game is it was the first one developed by Starbreeze Studios, who went on to greater fame with Enclave, two games in The Chronicles of Riddick series and The Darkness.
As a first project, KOTT has solid visuals, motion captured combat moves and some nicely done cut scenes that tell the game story quite well. On the other hand, the game is a bit raw around the edges, notably in character models and the fact that the gameplay never changes much from start to finish. As Paul De Raque, a young Templar Knight, you'll need to travel across a number of different stages in order to first, locate a missing priest, then, to rescue your betrothed after she's kidnapped by someone with demonic designs on her soul.
The game mixes up constant action with light adventuring and puzzles, but the focus is mostly on dispatching a large amount of human and non-human enemies before the do the same to you. Things start out fairly easy up until about a third of the way in when turban-wearing, twin sword swinging guards show up in two and threes and shortly afterward, when the enemies are a mixture of demons that can set you afire if you're careless. While you can use a keyboard/mouse setup to play, I highly recommend an Xbox-style game pad, as it makes the game a LOT more playable (this was originally a console game).
Paul will find a nice range of weapons, some dropped by enemies, some in plain view, hidden away in crates or in some cases, tucked away in secret areas. There's also a bit of magic usage here, thanks to Holy powers you acquire from your true love. This is a bit odd, given how religion and magic clash in the real world, but the powers are explained well enough and actually can turn the tables when the going gets really tough. I won't spoil the final third of the game at all except to say that every skill you've learned will be used before the tough end boss goes down.
In terms of presentation, the aforementioned graphics are decent for an older PC game, but the resolution only goes up to 1280 x 960, which looks odd if you still use a standard monitor. I loved the metallic effects on armor and weapons here. Your avatar gains new armor as the game goes on and he also looks more grizzled as he faces more bizarre enemies ans the game progresses. Enemies range from generic to creepy-looking, particularly in the final areas where things literally go to hell.
The sound production is great overall (despite plenty of repetition from enemies' mouths), the music is nice and gloomy for the most part and the game supports multiple languages, so you can play it in English, German, Spanish or Italian. While the cut scenes are great, they run a a very low, grainy resolution that can't be tweaked at all. I'll need to do some looking around to see if this was patched on the PC version, as it takes away from the experience a bit.
Overall, Knights of the Temple is an intriguing game experience worth tracking down that doesn't reinvent the action game wheel at all. On the other hand, it's long enough that fans of hack and slash games may want to give it a try. There's also a sequel, Knights of the Temple II, that was developed by Bratislava-based Cauldron SK, but that's another review for another time...Vollständige Rezension lesen
