I've been through various slide frames from various decades and manufacturers. Have tried Gepe, Hama, some Soviet stuff. With glass in both halves, with a single glass, glasless... You name the variation, I've probably tried it. But for now I think I'll settle for Gepe 3mm Glasless with a Metal Mask. You see... 1) Glass frames provide excellent flatness of the slide, which aids greatly with focusing. In theory. The downside is - you can see the AN glass texture projected with your slide - especially in areas with solid colors - sky and white, for example. Not cool, for I don't want anything to interfere with my slides. And the the mold - it really likes the tight, moist place between the sheets of glass. No god - mold shows up in a year or so... 2) Glassless frames don't provide the same reassuring protection for your unique, original slide. And they don't flatten the slide at all. So, when the lamp heats, the slide pops, creating a parabolic efect of your focusing, for now the center of your image is drawn towards the lamp, creating a 3D of sorts lol. BUT! They don't interfere with your image and they don't entrap condensed, moist air on your precious slide. BUT - since I have my slides stored in those slide-tray drawers, the resistance to the mechanical damage is not that an issue anymore. Gepe with a metal mask then comes in play - providing a flexible slide holder (when you must turn the slide physically in a frame to even that horizon out, for slide is held in the center) with a metal mask, that helps to flatten the image, and provide a sharp border for the projected image. And a little bit of that desired mechanical strength. Great! So, since I observed the mold and the projected AN pattern really got me, I've decided to go glassless, and this is my choice of a slide mount. And the focusing problem? Got rid from it by modding my projection lens, integrating in it a DIY aperture, to stop the lens down from 2.8 to about 5, providing more Depth Of Field for slide to focus in. So now I have most of the bonuses of AN glass - albeit in a glassless mount - and none the cons! And glassless mounts do cost a lot less! It took about 8 years to get to this. And for now I do think of this product as the very best glassless slide mount available and manufactured today!Vollständige Rezension lesen
