I purchased the DSP-A1 to use purely as a power amplifier. My newer model RX-V481 just didn't have enough umpf to fill our 25' X 25' home theater room. The RX-V481 is a fine receiver, just lacking power for my room's needs. Using an Oppo BDP-203 as HDMI preamp/processor for my setup, the Oppo has 7.1 channel analog outputs, the DSP-A1 has performed flawlessly as the power amp. What is truly shocking is how well the system sounds when I switch to optical output from the Oppo into the Yamaha and activate the Yamaha DSP profiles, for Dolby Pro-Logic recordings it is lovely and the "movie theater" program really takes the show to new levels. More modern digital files are challenging for the DSP, and definitely no HD audio from Blu-ray discs, but hey it was built before DTS and Blu-ray were invented. Overall am beyond pleased with an amp that cost me less than the newer, and significantly smaller RX-V481. Fit-Finish and build quality are also beyond expectations, better than some über expensive "high end" components I have played with. No complaints. Kudos to Yamaha, they built a true classic with the DSP-A1. I suggest this integrated amplifier for anyone looking for lots of multi-channel watts on a tight budget.Vollständige Rezension lesen

I have owned a Yamaha DSP 3000 since it came out. It is for music not for Movie Home Theater. If you enjoy Live music performances-Classical, jazz, rock, country--Yamaha corp went out of its way to reproduce the best acoustics. There are so many halls to choose from that it is bewildering. After a while you settle on a few and you adjust it to your taste. The effect has to be subtle, most noticeable when you turn the effect off. Properly done, you will never want to listen to stereo. My dsp3000 developed a hum from a cold solder connection. I will get it repaired, but I reviewed what was available and found the DSP A1 was the best one out there. I bought a DSP A1000 a few weeks earlier--in perfect condition--but it did not do. Both have 1st class amps. However, the real jewel is the DSP. Newer Yamaha products offer a limited selection of halls. It is a 10!Vollständige Rezension lesen

This model, known as Yamaha’s “10th Anniversary” edition since the introduction of the DSP-1 processor, is a big change in all of its predecessors. The first change, clearly visible, is the size. This beast, completely boxed weights over 100lbs. It succeeds the highly-regarded DSP-A3090 Soundfield Processing Amplifier, the first one to feature Dolby Digital. The Yamaha DSP-A1 would be the last model to be an integrated amplifier. The word “integrated” is used to describe a component which has a pre-amplifier and amplifier, but lacks a tuner. The model which would replace the DSP-A1, the RX-V1 processor would be the first of a series of processors, right up to the current production RX-Z9 which has a tuner and, therefore, the unit is called a receiver. The DSP-A1 features a whopping 110 watts to five channels and 35 watts to the “front effect” speakers. For those of you in confusion as to what “front effect” speakers are, they are a pair of “surround processing speakers, which are placed high and above the main channel speakers; the main channel speakers produce the natural, unprocessed sound (although you can opt to skip the “front effect” speakers and mix the processed sound through the main) and when that effect is used in conjunction with all the other channels, the results are staggering. This unit also features 42 DSP modes and also introduces the DTS (Digital Theater Sound), the other available home theater Digital surround format, in addition to Dolby Digital. It has a feature called “late-night listening” which allows you to hear your Dolby Digital without a blast of volume overtaking the main levels. The amplifier is very clean sounding. Even without the DSP effects, it will provide plenty of distortion-free clean sound to two channels, if that is what you desire. Yamaha did not stop there! They made this unit “obselete-proof” by allowing for the addition of a decoder for any other type of Digital Processing which might come along (SDDS-Sony Dynamic Digital Sound – the only other movie Digital Surround Processing format?) The only thing I found flimsy on this unit was the remote control: it feels like it is made of tin and the entire unit opens to display plenty of buttons for different functions. It does “glow in the dark,” but I think the remote control units for the previous DSP-A3090 and the replacement model RX-V1 were far more superior in terms of durability. By the way, the last production runs of the DSP-A1, called the DSP-A1x came with the same remote control as the Yamaha RX-V1. When considering to place a bid on E-Bay for this unit, or any audio component, it is important to ask the seller these questions, if they are not included in the description: (1) Are you the original owner? (2) Does this unit come complete with the original packaging – that is, the box and wrappings? I have found that people who keep these things are more likely to really care for the unit. That statement does not mean the unit is free of defects – (see # 3), but on a large scale, anyone who takes the trouble of saving all of these packing items is likely to care for the unit. I have all the packing items for my many components. (3). Does the unit work properly? How thorough was it tested? Is there any scratchiness in either the input selector or volume control? Does the display unit work properly? (4) Is the remote control included as well as the instructions?Vollständige Rezension lesen
I bought my A-1 a couple of years ago on e-bay. I had wanted one of these beauties since auditioning one in 98 at a high end audio store when i was living in San Diego. They had it hooked up to a 5.1 system of BW monitors and the sound was incredible. No matter the format at the time it performed so well with a noise floor incredibly low. I love to play with yamahas different modes with this at the time had the most out there. The thing i love about it is how well it plays both music and movies. I know compared with the newer models the formats on this beauty still provides top level sound and no noise. When i first heard this unit i wanted one for a long time and in its day with a almost 3000 price little rich for me but since i have one now its still playing at a high level of performance now and hope for years to come.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I couldn't find anything about this gem on he internet. It's an older high-end surround receiver primarily for music, does 7.1 surround (the extra 2 channels are front surrounds, mounted above your main speakers. Dolby is introducing a version of this). Allows extreme flexibility in recreating all kinds of acoustic spaces, plus Dolby Pro-Logic (but no Dolby digital and no 5.1 input:( Sound quality and power blows away any of the bottom end new surround receivers. If you want a gorgeous looking and sounding surround sound processor/amplifier and can live without Dolby Digital, check one out. Similar to the DSP-A1000, maybe its precessor?
