Rating: ***** Advantages: Well built, nice features, looks sleak Disadvantages: Quite big I had a cheap dvd player for a while which done the job but unfortunately it packed up. Luckily I have inherited this player due to a family member upgrading to a dvd recorder. From what I’ve read the Pioneer 717 was one of the best dvd players around for it’s time. It’s easy to see why. The player has been modified to cope with playing multi-region discs. This upgrade was done relatively cheaply but is also an upgrade that allows you to pick the region rather than allowing the player to automatically select. This means you’re pretty much ok when it comes to getting around those troublesome discs which try and stop themselves from playing if they detect a multi-region upgrade. The player itself is pretty big; you have to bear in mind that the 717 has now been around for six years. Certainly compared to current players on the market it’s like a behemoth in height, width and depth. But you can certainly feel the quality of the construction. The player feels incredibly tough and built to last. Reviews of the 717 praise it for its picture and sound output. I can’t disagree on both accounts. In comparison to my budget player the difference is noticeable. Picture quality looks to be a lot more defined and there is more sharpness in the picture. I can’t really judge to the sound output to it’s full potential as I don’t have home cinema facilities. However I do notice a little bit more definition in this area. It’s worth pointing out that the player is capable of playing both Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks. I believe it was one of the first players on the market to do so. The look the player is pretty chic. The front come’s in a metallic champagne colour and there’s very little on the front. The design is fairly minimal with only buttons for the basic controls of play etc. The only letdown is the power switch, which feels a little flimsy in comparison to the rest of the buttons on the front. The disc tray is also not the smoothest I’ve encountered but this could be down to around six years of heavy use! The LCD display is quite nifty as the player let’s you dim it down to complete darkness, a great option for those home cinema enthusiasts. The set-up of the player is incredibly simple; menu navigation is fairly basic but does the job in a small number of steps. Anyone with little knowledge of technology shouldn’t have any real problems. The remote control is similar to the player; it’s a big one. It features a shuttle wheel so you can navigate through films with the turn of a finger. Not a lot of remotes have this option and it’s a good feature to have. The only downside is that after several years of use it’s looking worn and the paint job and slowly ebbed away. The remote seems to have been designed with the home cinema user in mind. The buttons although small can be illuminated of you’re watching a movie in the dark. Navigation of dvd’s with the buttons are also easy. If I was buying a dvd player now I may look to get one more slim line in design than this one. However in terms of build quality and little features this player takes some beating, as I’ve mentioned this player has survived heavy use for around six years. You could spend £30 on a player which will pack up after 12 months, look around and you may be able to pick one of these models up cheap. If you can then I’d cerVollständige Rezension lesen
