The Minolta Dimage 5400 has been out of production for over 10 years and parts are no longer being made for them. They tend to be very clunky and slow to use as well, and, like most of the older scanners, they will not run on any of the newer operating systems. They also have very shallow depth of field which makes it difficult to get an entire image sharp in one scan if the slide being scanned is not flat. So why bother? Simply because they can also make the best scans of any desktop scanner regardless of claimed resolution. The 5400dpi resolution is twice the resolution of just about any slide you will ever encounter, and the scans from this scanner come pretty close to capturing 100% of the information on the original slide. As to color accuracy, it's irrelevant; what you want is to capture as much of the information on the original slide as you can. All the color adjustments, if needed, should take place in Photoshop or equivalent after the scan is made.Vollständige Rezension lesen

The Konica/Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400 is a practical consumer option for archiving 35mm slide collections. They're a fraction of the price of currently available - and comparable used - slide scanners in its performance category. And unlike the Nikon products, the 5400 allows set and forget workflow for 4 slide batches without an add-on slide feeder. All this practicality comes at a price, however: given its age the unit requires Windows XP (or earlier). While there is a patch out on the net that's alleged to get it to function with Vista, I was not able to get it to work, and eventually hooked it up to an older computer. High-quality scans are time-consuming, both in terms of the scanning time of the slides and software/processing time. Be aware of this before going into a scanning project, and plan what you're going to do during scan cycles. They are also processor intensive - you won't want to use the attached computer during cycles - and quickly eat up storage space. Once you get your own preferences figured out (output quality, corrections, Digital ICE) you can can efficiently work your way through several boxes of slides in an afternoon. And while it's the only scanner I've personally used, I think it's a high quality solution to the expense of having a service scan your slides. These units are well-built, readily available, and deliver quality results. I look forward to keeping mine for many years.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I first tried the Minolta 5400 and it worked great, good speed, color and high resolution. Next, I found a 5400 series II and it may be better but they're both great. Reviews say that the software is a pain, I don't see the problem at all. The drivers load without failure and the software is feature rich. I don't use the extra features like ICE etc. because, in the end, they can degrade the image slightly. I may go back and try them again. For many slides I use the color enhancement feature, it seems to do an acceptable job most of the time. One thing the Nikon scanners have that's nice is the ability to add a stack loader or a long roll feeder but they're both $300-400 so I think I can live with this. Overall I worry about the feed and internal works slightly but I've never had even the slightest problem so I'm very happy.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I first chose the Scan Elite for its resolution and dynamic range. I first bought version I and then a version II. I realized I am entirely dependent on these machines for my fine art B&W work. When nothing comparable appeared on the market, I decided to look for another to back up my arsenal. I use these scanners with VueScan software and find them capable of producing excellent images. For those in need of support services, Sony/Konica/Minolta provide support at 1-677-462-4464. I recommend buying one now while supplies last. They're irreplaceable!
I am scanning dozens of Kodachrome slides from the 1970's. The resolution of this scanner is fantastic and the colors are vibrant. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. VueScan is a snap to use and gets the best output imaginable.
