I purchased this volume because I am transcribing and editing some lectures I tape recorded decades ago. Once in a while Kaufmann says something a bit "off the wall" (if that old saying is in current usage) but generally his translations are pretty reliable. Understand though that even though English is classified as a "Germanic Language," German does not generally translate well into English. But this particular volume has been a standard for decades. Certainly, no one volume is going to have "everything." But this is about as close as one can find to a good cross section of Nietzsche's writings. By the way, from my recent studies of Nietzsche, I have concluded that Nietzsche was no existentialist, but rather a physicalist, for lack of a better term. Man is not "the maker of all things" as it was for the sophist Protagoras. Nietzsche however uses the method of rhetoric, which was the method of Protagors (as well as Hume and Kant). That might mislead one into thinking he was an extentialist which I maintain he clearly was not. Imagine, the Platonic Forms removed from "Platonic Heaven" and put at the center of everything physical (that "form" being the will to power). That, in a nutshell, is Nietzsche. And yes, everything physical has a "will" in Nietzsche's sense. Even gravitational bodies. Even electrically charged particles "will" them selves attracted or repelled from other charged bodies. A strange way to view the world for the scientifically trained, but also intriguing. This is why, as some of us say, Nietzsche is Pietzsche.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Humble opinion: Walter Kaufmann provides not only a stimulating, thorough and cogent introduction to the life and works of a man my wife and I affectionately refer to as "our favorite 19th century German syphilitic philosopher," but a delightful example of thoughtful, clear-eyed, impassioned scholarship. Very recommended, as well as other works by Kaufmann, on this and other subjects.

Nietzsche is brilliant. Kaufmann's comments are helpful in understanding that brilliance.
