At first, taking the lens in your hands, you get scared. It has plastic, light, very loose parts and it seems that it will fall apart. But the shooting results are pleasing. Sharpness and colors are good. Autofocus is sometimes wrong.On full-frame cameras, it gives vignetting of the edges of the frame at open apertures. Weak sharpness at the corners. Chromatic aberration at the edges of the frame. The lens gives good sharpness at F8, but the sharpness at the edges of the frame is weak for shooting architecture. There is barrel distortion throughout the focal range, the severity of the effect is reduced with the growth of focal.But given the price of the lens and its advantages, you can close your eyes to all the shortcomings. Phoenix Gold 19-35mm AF lens
There are many "off-brand" lenses for SLR and DSLR cameras available. Some are overpriced, and are even more expensive than the camera manufacturer's own lenses. I generally find that the off-brands do not offer the image quality I desire as a professional photographer. I seldom use an extreme wide angle lens so when I switched to doing a lot of digital photography and less film recording, I did not own a really wide angle lens. I saw the Phoenix on eBay and was able to purchase a new one at a great price, so I bought it. I have been very pleasantly surprised by it. The lens has a nice finish, and has a hefty feel-it is a good blend of metal and polymer. It has separate rings for zoom and manual focus, and they track smoothly with proper resistance. You can focus manually with the lens ... There are many "off-brand" lenses for SLR and DSLR cameras available. You can focus manually with the lens set for autofocus mode, a feature offered only on more expensive lenses. Autofocus is plenty fast for a lens of this type-you don't use a wide angle normally for action photography! It focuses quietly and smoothly without "searching" in normal light. It has a usable f-stop range from 3.5 to 4.5. Additionally, on the focus ring is a distance scale, another feature lacking in so many other modern lenses. My only suggestion for the exterior is that they place, for ease of attachment to the camera, a colored dot on the external barrel of the lens instead of inside the metal lens coupler; this would help when changing lenses rapidly. I placed a tiny red dot of fingernail polish on mine to aid my lining up quickly. A plastic lens shade of sorts comes with the lens but I do not use it; it makes it almost impossible to thread on a filter without first removing the thing, and, it does not extend outward far enough to really stop much extraneous light.It accepts 77 mm filters. Image quality-both color and contrast is above average. It renders excellent image sharpness and I see no vignetting. In comparing it to a borrowed Canon lens of near the same zoom range, I can't obviously see any image difference. I did not compare them at high magnification, however. This is the first Phoenix lens I have ever owned; I was frightened by their low cost compared to better known brands. Assuming this lens to be representative of their line of lenses, I was mistaken in my judgment. I would like to test more of their products. I find I have uses for this lens I did not anticipate, and am very well pleased. Remember, readers- with any slight differences to more costly cameras and lenses, if you have a decent digital editing program, you can quickly make up for any slight deficiencies of cheaper lenses. You can purchase this lens new for $150 or more less than manufactured of other off-brand lenses. It's a solid performer and a solid value!

After searching the web for a bit, I've found that most websites conclude that this lens is one that is sold under various names, including Vivitar, Tamron, Tokina, Cosina, Quantaray, and Vivitar. I have the Cosina version, but the general consensus with this series of lenses is that for the value, it can't be beat. I celebrated a $19.99 victory and am still happy with the performance of the lens. I wanted a cheap and light wide angle lens to fit the 1D/1Ds bodies and a standard zoom lens for the backup cropped body. And of course, I didn't want a lens that can't perform at all if I'm caught with it mounted.... and to be frank, given its great reputation, I actually picked this one up to see what the fuss was about. Center performance is generally good (more than I expect for sure). ... The build varies depending on branding (Cosina version is acceptable as a consumer lens). If you can pick one up for cheap, this would be an excellent lens. It is as good as people say it is. The next step up would require more funding, the various brand 17-35mm, Sigma 15-30mm, or even the 17-40mm L if you want to have an EF lens that doubles as a standard wide on a cropped body.

A good lens for digital EOS cameras
This lens is clear, focuses fast, has good edge and corner sharpness as expected of Series 1 from Vivitar. The feel is a little loose, but I attribute that to the design needs relative to focusing speed and accuracy. In manual focus the ring offers no resistance, but I can get used to it. In auto-focus the speed and accuracy of focus are as good as any of the ultrasonic lenses by Canon (not including the L lenses). I can use this lens on my Digital Rebel XT with the 1.6 multiplier to yield effective focal lengths from 30.4 to 56mm. It still works great on my Digital EOS 5D and is much less expensive than the superwide zoom 16-35mm or the 24-70mm L lenses and not limited in usage like the S lenses.This lens is clear, focuses fast, has good edge and corner sharpness as expected of Series 1 from Vivitar. Great bang for the buck
Do not expect pro results from this lens. It is soft as sh** wide open and needs to be stopped down a few stops before you get any kind of sharpness. I recommend this lens for a first foray into wide-angle photography - you can't get any better for $50-$90. Autofocus is fairly fast in normal light and is neither noisy or quiet. It will tend to seek in lower light so I recommend manual focus. I also highly recommend buying a hood if it isn't included as this lens is really bad with flares, unless you're exploiting flares for artisitic effect. The mount contacts on the one I purchased were a little worn from use and would occasionally produce an Error 99, causing me to miss some shots. I went over the contacts with a rubber pencil eraser lightly and it seems to have fixed it. This ... Do not expect pro results from this lens.
