The great thing about an external casing is that if you have a hard drive from a computer, that will not boot. If you put it in an external case you can still access the info or data on it as it is not a 'system drive'. That is, it does not need the system files (e.g., Windows) that may be on it to run. The system just recognizes it a just another USB device. In file explorer, you will see is as a USB drive with a drive letter allocated to it. In fact, if you are permanently going to use it as an external drive, in order to get more storage space, you can delete any system files on it. However, I would only recommend that to an experienced user.

This attractive looking caddy is easy enough to assemble and will take either a 3.5" IDE drive, or the more modern SATA drives for PCs. It includes all the necessary cables & connectors for both types. Ít also comes with a neat little horseshoe stand. My IDE drive worked straight away after I fitted it, connected the supplied USB lead, and switched it on. A blue power light appears and you see the drive in My Computer. You can read, copy from or write to the drive at will. Sometimes the casing does get slightly warm, but that's as expected, but never hot. I'd suggest placing it vertically in its stand that allows air to circulate around it, rather than laying it flat on a desk where heat cannot escape from underneath. The only niggle with it so far is that unlike other USB devices on my PC this one cannot be removed safely without stopping Indexing Services first, so it loses a star for that. It's too early to judge whether this is a great product as I hope at the very least to get 3 years out of it. So far it's worked well as an external storage drive as well as a spare boot-up drive, and it seems very good value.Vollständige Rezension lesen

My only gripe about this caddy is the shoddy psu that comes with it. It's not capable of supplying enough current for some drives. It was fine with a 3.5" sata HDD but it would constantly drop the connection to my pc when used with a couple of ide drives. I noticed the ide drives both specified 1.5A on the 12V and 5V rails but the psu is only capable of supplying 2A max. I swapped the psu for another I had that is rated for 4A and the caddy now works perfectly with any drive. So far the maximum size HDD I've used is a 750GB and it worked fine. Transfer speeds are normal for a USB 2.0 device, averaging 30-35MB/s. The caddy looks pretty good and doesn't feel cheap, plus the frame is metal so it acts as a heatsink for the drive. That comes in handy as there is no cooling fan so you have to rely on the passive cooling abilities of the case. All in all I'm happy with it but I recommend you check how much power your drive needs before purchasing this.Vollständige Rezension lesen
