Grumbach has long been a major figure in the world of French fashion, first as the head of his family's textile company, C Mendès in 1963, in 1966 as cofounder of Saint Laurent Rive Gauche with Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé , and most recently from 1998, as the chairman of the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode , and of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, from which he retired in 2014.
