    A very descriptive piece which started a slowburner but speeded up like a train as we got going. Compelling reading if a little dark in places.

    A good story with very detailed descriptions. Perhaps a little dark and slow to start with but action accelerated particularly towards the end. Contained a few bits of vocabulary I am not familiar with but I recognise where the story is set from my memories of steam railway sheds in their last days in Lancashire. The short chapters made for easy stop start reading.

    A compelling story woven around real locations

    Like all of the Andrew Martin books in the detective Jim Stringer series the story is set in a real location The Necropolis Railway Station in London (although now defunct) and the Brookwood cemetery. A lot of background work has obviously gone into the book which makes it more compelling. In my opinion the easiest way to remember historical events is where a fictional story has been woven into the facts rather than just a list of places and dates. I bought the book rather than borrowing from the library as I know I will pick it up regularly to read again. As I also have an interest in the days of steam (which I can remember) I have now read all but two of this great series and I am looking forward to buying, reading and treasuring the final two books.
