At long last, a widescreen edition of this little gem
First of all, this is the PAL (European) transfer, so you need a DVD player that converts PAL-to-NTSC(U.S.) to view it. There are a number of inexpensive such players around. This is also the widescreen version, unlike various pan and scan transfers to LaserDisc and Cable available in the U.S. We saw this movie 1st run when it came out, and enjoyed it tremendously. Even if you've seen the other versions, this is worth watching. It's a mystery and an adventure and holds up well to multiple viewings. The acting and production values are good, a touch above the Jeremy Brett 'Sherlock Holmes' series. Excellent period thriller
Though this film is over forty years old, it is still very watchable. The film is set in 1914 before the start of the First World War, interesting to see all aspects of that very well recreated period: both horse drawn and motor car traffic in the streets, a steam train, people's dress and attitudes. Robert Powell excelled in the lead role, and all the cast contributed hugely to this thriller. The copy of the film I bought played perfectly, making it a quirky extra birthday present for a 39 year old! Though this film is over forty years old, it is still very watchable. So astroundinjg and Atmospheric
The 39 steps written my John Buchan founder of Daft Friday at Glasgow University of which I attended. This is the 3rd version and the best there is, the acting is superb and the whole film is very atmospheric and apty portrays the precarious days leading up to the Great war of 1914 - 18. Love the contrast of the old and the new as we are leaving the high lights of the Edwardian Age. Sir John Mills as Scudder is excellant, Robert Powel as Hanny excellant And Karen Dotrice is so stunning. The music is awesome right from the start the suspense begins. Great combination from Strings and brass. This movie is a gem and surpasses the Robert Donat Version and Kenneth More version with the Clackmannan Harriers. Adventure story.
Although I know this story very well and this version is nearer to the book than the old black and white version, I did not enjoy it as much as I was hoping to. To be honest, I found it a little bland. A shame really as the cast is good. It is an adventure story.

It's a good story. And the dvd is good quality.
I watched this film with my husband as he mentioned he hadn't seen it for a long time. He enjoyed. It took me a while to get into the story line but in the end I liked it.
