Here's a flick that nobody has the balls to remake, though it could be 10X more graphic with today's CGI technology. Still, the special effects continue to accent the story just as well now as back in the day when Bill Hurt's character blows his mind & "gets it on with God". He starts out 'shroomin with the Huichol Indians in a primitive desert mountain village. Like any other clueless white boy in the Chihuahan Desert of Mexico, he promptly wears-out his welcome. He wants to get into a frickin isolation tank while spaced outta his gourd on a synthesized & concentrated active ingredient found in the Indian's fungi. Back home at the University he gets his wish, with funding, and the weirdness begins. Ya gotta wonder if the flick is purely fiction..it seems to me there was a time when mega-intelligent professors & the such were legitamately experimenting with psychedelics for "mind expansion"..look at Harvard's Dr. Richard Albert who went to India in a three piece suit with a BIG bottle of LSD ..& came back in a white robe with the 'holy' name of Baba Ram Dass (pissed his family off so much they called him Baba Rammed-Ass). Medicine Men, Shamans, & Witch Doctors...they be primitive look'in and live'in, but the crap they can pull to a point folks see and hear the unbelievable is not to be taken lightly. My favourite example being the reason behind Northern California's ancient Bay Area mountain Mt. Diablo being named such. The story goes a band of fierce Indian resistance was encountered by early Spanish Conquistadors around the summitt of the mountain. Advancing soldiers were turned retreating, terrified, claiming they'd seen "El Diablo" or The Devil appear out of thin air...they'd just met the tribe's Holy Man and he was pissed. So 'Mt. Diablo' stuck, but the Conquistadors went back with a cannon...and that was the end of the resistance ontop the sacred & ancient East Bay mountain. 'Just like the research in this movie is just slammed shut & evidence destroyed...the story leaving ya hanging & wondering. The mind is a very powerful tool, when it gets tweaked there's no limit to the unbelievable realities it can manifest...if one knows what they're doing and not simply "cop'n a buzz"....or like today's youth- "going for the coma"! See it stoned....don't bring a date, this is one for the guys. Lottsa shroom-fu, a few breasts & some butt, stoned love-making...5-Stars, Joe Bobb sez, "Check it out"!Vollständige Rezension lesen
This was an early movie for the actor William Hurt and the rest of the cast. Living near Boston, MA as I do the it brought back great memories.
