Do animals have rights? Do we owe any duties to animals in the wild or those kept as pets, used for laboratory experiments and for eating? Roger Scruton sets out an account of how we should think about the morality of our relationships to other animals. He argues that it is wrong to believe that animals have rights since there is no evidence that they could be members of a moral community. This does not imply, however, that we owe them no duties: moral reasoning points us towards a complex series of duties to animals, especially those dependent on us for their care.
