The AWUS036H in combination with the 7dBi antenna definitely works as people frequently describe in positive reviews, but there is a caveat concerning the antenna that I feel is missing from some comments I've seen, namely the importance of line of sight. At the outer edge of a typical wifi router's range (in my case what I measured as being arounf 130 paces), the AWUS036H does a great job of latching onto the signal (though one may have to experiment a little to get the aim right), but I found that if the signal then has to go through so much as a single walll, the link will fail. In my scenario, simply moving from one side of a kitchen to another would result in signal loss, because on one side there was a clear line of sight through a window (the receiving router in question being in the distance on the other side of a river, in a golf club cafe), while on the other side of the room the signal had to contend with a house wall and then the corner of a garage. Thus, when planning out the use of a unit like this, take care to consider line of sight, what intervening objects might be in the way, including walls, other buildings, etc. In terms of installation, as others have said it is important to download the latest drivers from the manufacturer website (or direct from Realtek), don't use the drivers provided on the supplied disc. My unit didn't work until I removed the supplied drivers and installed the Realtek driver pack version 1.00.0145 instead. Also, if you're using the AWUS036H with a device that already has any kind of built-in wifi receiver (in my case, an MSI gaming laptop with Killer Wifi), it is important to turn off the built-in wifi when trying to use the AWUS036H, otherwise they will likely conflict. If after all this you find the AWUS036H just doesn't have the necessary range, I did find more powerful alternatives that cost more, but the antenna required is comparatively enormous (one model quoted a 50km range, using a 24cm antenna). Most of the time though, the AWUS036H should serve your needs. On a CalMac ferry while still in harbour, I heard passengers comment they could pick up the ship's wifi, whereas the AWUS036H was detecting more then 20 different networks, including all the ferry's separate access points, some detected networks presumably being away from the immediate docks, so the AWUS036H definitely has good range under normal conditions. Lastly, I'd like to point out that if you're in a situation where the AWUS036H does permit a link but the location in question is not exactly ideal (in my case, the relevant spot was right by a window on the first floor of a house in a spare bedroom), then one idea for a better setup is to make use of a very simple PC (miniITX, even a NUC), connect the AWUS036H and then attach a second router or similar device as an access point so that the PC acts as a bridge to the more distant wifi base, ie. the simple PC will then provide more general wifi access anywhere within the locality (in my case, a moderately large detached house), assuming one has chosen a unit with sufficient power and sensitivity. Do bare in mind that older buildings will have thicker/denser walls, so an entry level router is unlikely to be that effective unless the surroundings are more like a modern flat with thinner walls. There's no point spending money on getting the distant wifi link working, only to then skimp out on the local infrastructure extension. Overall though, a good product which works well, just let down a little by the supplied drivers being unsuitable. Ian.Vollständige Rezension lesen
