Product Information

The protagonist, Mary Emma Moody, widowed mother of six, has taken her family east in 1912 to begin a new life. Her son, Ralph, then thirteen, recalls how the Moodys survive that first bleak winter in a Massachusetts town. Money and prospects are lacking, but not so faith and resourcefulness. "Mother" in Little Britches and Man of the Family , Mary Emma emerges fully as a character in this book, and Ralph, no longer called "Little Britches," comes into his own. The family's run-ins with authority and with broken furnaces in winter are evocative of a full and warm family life. Mary Emma & Company continues the Moody saga that started in Colorado with Little Britches and runs through Man of the Family and The Home Ranch . All these titles have been reprinted as Bison Books, as has The Fields of Home , in which Ralph leaves the Massachusetts town for his grandfather's farm in Maine.

  • Once again the Moody's Shine!

This book falls in the middle of the Ralph Moody series, written about his family in the early 1900's. Mary Emma is Ralph's mother, a new widow during the time period covered in the book that bears her name. If you believe in the importance of family togetherness, in the hand of God watching out for his children who need him, and in the basic goodness of mankind, then you'll love this story. Mary Emma moves her family to Boston and has to make a go of supporting six children while teaching them the things most important to her. You'll come to love the Moodys and wish you could move right in! Every child should have a mom like Mary Emma, and brothers and sisters who stand up for each other through thick and thin. Great adventures, great characters, and great life's lessons! Read ...

  • Perhaps the best book for family reading in the whole world!

This is the fourth book in Ralph Moody's biographical series of stories about his growing up in the early 1900's--better in my view than the Little House series by far. Starting with Little Britches, which chronicles the family's move to Colorado in hopes that the climate and altitude will cure his father's TB, the series shows how a family of faith, hard work, independence, and love can triumph over the hardest trails. By Mary Emma & Company, Ralph's father has died, leaving him the Man of the Family at the age of 11, and his mother to raise and support (with the help of her children) six children, including a posthumous baby. In this book, the family returns to New England, where they must find and whole new way of supporting themselves, and where Ralph has to deal with a culture much ...

  • Classic! Entertaining with old fashioned character!

Ralph Moody does an excellent job of portraying what life was like in a different era. My mom read these books aloud to my brothers and sisters and I growing up. We all loved them. It was a cherished family time experience. There are some great character lessons in these books. I love the morals and values found in the stories and that they are told in such an entertaining and captivating way. Even if you don't consider yourself to be a "reader" do yourself a favor and read these books. If you like the thought of the "good old days" and the simple philosophy of right and wrong you will not be disappointed! I loved them so much I just had to get the series for myself. If I ever have kids I will definitely be reading these books to them!

  • Humorous but Touching Family Tale

This book is excellent! It's about a large family who has lost their father and must make a living for themselves. Pulling together, they manage seemingly impossible feats, and are able to support themselves decently. But it's not an unrealistic book at all. The siblings have quarrels and the mother speaks sharply now and again...yet they always resolve their difficulties and work together to bring about something better. There are many humorous chapters, and some that are simply just touching. Excellent read-aloud for families, or just a fun book for the kid in everyone! Five stars!!

  • A GREAT READ !!!!! What a touching, family story. They all pulled together, worked hard, and didn't complain. Was hard to put down !!!!
