Titanium is an excellent 'getter' material in high and ultra-high vacuum chambers. You can use these heating elements at temperatures preferably between about 200-400 Celsius to pull in hydrogen gas that your turbopump or diffusion pump haven't yet managed to eliminate. To release previously accumulated gas, just heat the element a bit higher, to about 600-700 C, for a short period. You can also use a PTC heating element in a pot of titanium powder, but for various reasons especially in long axial vacuum systems, using this wire can be more convenient. It also can't get spilled all over your chamber if you knock it over. So it depends on your system configuration.
