Were you in your 20's in the 80's ?
If you were, like me, this movie IS the 80's. Less Than Zero ranks right up there with all the other GREAT teenage angst 80's movies.(Breakfast Club-Pretty In Pink-License To Drive-Sixteen Candles-St Elmo's Fire) But what sets this movie apart, is the serious, dirty, hard hitting performance by Robert Downey Jr. Watching him in this role is heartbreaking. If you were in love with Jami Gertz in the 80's(& who wasn't) just watching her is worth the price of admission. A side note on Jami Gertz. If you Google her now, she looks just as good as she did then. Amazing. There's a whole list of other great young actors in this movie that you will recognize & think, "I didn't know they were in this movie." The movie also satisfies the guilty ... Money doesn't buy happiness. Not in this movie, anyway. If you missed this one back in the day. Do yourself a favor & check out Less Than Zero. You'll be glad you did. GJM

Friends forever
The cast alone is a reason to add this to your collection - McCarthy, Spader, Gertz, and the show stopper Downey Jr. Although this movie is marketed as a drug movie about the fast life in Beverly Hills rich kids, if you look deeper it is more about friendship and how far one is willing to give of oneself for another. By the opening we realize that Gertz has had as much as she can take of junkie Downey and recruits McCarthy in her struggle to save Downey who has deteriorated massively since McCarthy has last seen him. Spader has enabled Downey's condition and made his position in life less than zero. Towards the end of the movie we discover Spader is prostituting Downey to men to pay his 50,000 debt. This is where McCarthy steps in and sees first hand what his long time friend has ... great holiday movie to watch
robert downey jr. gave his breakthrough performance as a spoiled beverly hills teen losing himself to drug addiction in this whitewashed adaption of the bret easton ellis best seller. the story's lead character (played by andrew mccarthy) somehow got changed from a jaded hedonist to an earnest do gooder, but downey's performance and the film's candy colored neon tinged version of a decadent 1980s christmas still endure. this is a great holiday movie to watch.robert downey jr. gave his breakthrough performance as a spoiled beverly hills teen losing himself to drug addiction in this whitewashed adaption of the bret easton ellis best seller. the story's lead character (played by andrew mccarthy) somehow got changed from a jaded hedonist to an earnest do gooder, but downey's performance and the film's candy colored neon tinged version of a decadent 1980s christmas still endure. this is a great holiday movie to watch.

Less Than Zero DVD
I liked this movie because it shows the hardcore truth about what life is like when someone is addicted to drugs,it does not hold back! It is almost a prophecy to what Robert Downey Jr.'s life was to actually become. It has a grat cast of actors. The only thing I can say negative is that it can be a little melo-dramatic at times and they over played the drinking at the high school graduation, on campus, with the parents there. AS if that would ever happen! But that is what I love about the 80's movies! If you don't want kids to see sex, open drug abuse, and prostitution then they should not watch this one with you. Like I said this movie does not hold back, nor is it subtle! Great Movie of the late 80's
Robert Downey plays a great role and well acted. Sad thing later in his career life impersonted art because he went down the drug use role. Happy he found help and reestablished his acting career
