I bought this camera to complement my Olympus E-PL2. I had planned to make the E-PL2 my main camera, while using the E-PM1 for occasional use as I would a point-and-shoot unit. I have been amazed, however, at the E-PM1 for its excellent construction, fast shooting, and picture quality. For most shots, I have used the E-PM1 with an Olympus 17mm prime lens. This combination has been a pleasure to use. Not only does the lens suit the camera in appearance and handy size, but the sharpness, depth of field and color are fantastic. The pictures taken with this camera are so good, they seem unlikely to come from such a compact camera. I highly recommend the Olympus E-PM1!
Looking for an easier camera to carry than my full sized prosumer DSLR on hiking and other active trips- my search landed me on the PEN series of cameras. Having a full featured DSLR at my disposal, I wanted a camera that would serve as a point and shoot, yet give me manual control when I felt the "creative urge." I settled on the E-PM1 as it was the smallest and was the least intimidating if I were to hand it over to someone else. In the first few weeks of working with this camera- I can already tell it is a keeper. It is small enough with the kit lens collapsed to be almost pocketable- fitting in some loose cargo shorts I sometimes wear. Most of the time I keep it in a (tight fitting) Lowepro Apex60- where it is easily accessed and carried, or more often with the 14-150mm lens in the LowePro Apex100 - (yes, the camera, flash and both lenses do fit!) Even with both lenses and the flash in the case- it is smaller than my DSLR and main walkaround lens alone. The image quality is great for this size of camera. I have multiple decent point and shoot cameras that don't even come close to the clarity and color representation provided by this camera. The interchangable lens option is very nice as well, initially I thought I would use the 14-150mm all the time- and leave the 14-42mm at home, but have found the 14-42 to be not only much more portable, but a better lens with less distortion- especially at the wide end. With the crop factor of 2x yielding a 28-82mm (and 28-300mm with the optional lens) effective focal length, and with built-in stabilization- this camera is capable and suited to many situations. Manual settings are changed through an on-screen menu- and a little more buried than on the larger models that sport a "dial" - and some of the controls are not as intuitive to a Canon user, like zoom/navigation in playback- but nothing that cannot be easily overcome. Battery life is astonishing for a camera (and battery) that is this small. The only area that I was a little disappointed was in low-light performance. This camera boasts fast autofocus- and delivers until there is insufficient light to function fully. Even with manual control- this f3.5-5.6 lens feels much slower than it should be, requiring higher ISO or providing very poor low light results. However, for most situations this is a beautiful little camera that takes stunning images and has all the cool features you would expect in a high end unit, and the ability to take control if you feel the need- but easy enough to hand to grandma!!!Vollständige Rezension lesen
Conclusion - Pros 1.1 Good (not best) low ISO image quality and resolution. 1.2 Fast and responsive operation. 1.3 Fast, accurate autofocus. 1.4 Full HD AVCHD video. 1.5 AF assist lamp. 1.6 Comprehensive in-camera raw and jpeg editing capability. 1.7 High degree of camera and menu customization. 1.8 Art filters offer fun, creative effects. Conclusion - Cons 2.1 High ISO noise performance lagging behind competitors' newer sensors 2.2 Overly aggressive default noise filter setting for JPEG output 2.3 Digital IS for video capture can introduce unnatural-looking footage 2.4 Lack of a hand grip can make handling awkward with heavy lenses 2.5 Use of clip-on flash precludes use of an EVF or any other accessory port item. For me it is bad idea clip-on flash. 2.6 No orientation sensor means you have to manually rotate images shot in portrait orientation 2.7 Complex menu system (for its target audience) 2.8 Shortness of function keys, feels like a low-budget camera.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I had my doubts when I decided to acquire the E-PM1 as a second Pen body. Price settled the issue, though; I just could not afford the E-P3 (I have and love the E-P2), though I hoped to take advantage of the faster focusing lens and the new image processing. A short time with the E-PM1 later, and I can honestly say I love this little machine. I'm not a point and shoot photographer, and I was concerned that changing settings that I habitual use would be cumbersome on this camera, but they are not, not really. No, it does not have the direct access to iso, aperture, white balance and a number of other settings that are immediately available on the E-P2, but I have found changing them is fast and easy nonetheless. I typically shoot aperture priority auto with frequent exposure compensation adjustments to get the exposure I'm after; it takes an extra click on this camera as opposed to the E-P2, but it is pretty instinctive after a while. Even shooting fully manual, which I do when using a polarizer or in certain problematic situations, is not a problem. The new kit zoom seems sharper to me than the original 14-42 I had, and I know it is faster on this camera. The image quality, as with all the Pens, is stunning, and the video is very good, though I'm essentially a still photographer. The new lens, though, takes video on a Pen to a whole new level. People have different ideas about noise and high iso shooting. I have shot all the Pens at iso 1250 without thinking twice, and I keep noise reduction off and noise filtration to low. I have little patience for the hysteria about noise in digital photography, and prefer a nicely delineated grain to the mush of over-zealous noise reduction. A fast prime lens makes the issue largely moot. The camera is very light and small but feels solid and is hard not to like. I'd have rated the features at 5 if the camera had focus DOF preview.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This camera is a great upgrade from a normal point and shoot! It has good video and awesome pictures. Once you take the time to learn the features you will be happy. There are some hidden menus and features that take some time to figure out and are slightly confusing.. READ THE MANUAL!! Only con I have so far is that the auto focus during video recording is a little loud and will come through in recordings of quiet environments. This can be remedied by useing the Olympus external mic mounted somewhere other than on top of the camera because it will be the same if you just attach it in the hot shoe slot. Also, if you hear a grinding noise at slower shutter speeds try turning off the image stabilizaion because it is kind of loud. Don't worry though it's not broken.
