I bought this because I was hoping it would help ID later Barbie fashions that Sarah Sink Eames does not cover in her current three volumes which only go to 1979 or so. Unfortunately, that remains difficult and this book was not as comprehensive it that area as I had hoped. It did help a great deal as it shows many, many department store exclusive fashions and dolls as well as most if not all of the collector's editions. It was still a very worthwhile purchase in that regard. I did like how it was laid out. It is very informative and helpful if you are a collector of or trying to identify all the exclusives and collector's editions. There is not much to dislike about the book itself. It is well written and put together and fun to look through. The one thing I found a little personally disheartening was how Barbie in many cases has been used as nothing more than a cheap shameless marketing gimmick in many instances. I know that is nothing new or unique to Barbie dolls by any means. However, I feel it cheapens and takes something away from the doll in a sense. Just my personal opinion.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is a review of "The Collector's Encyclopedia of Barbie Doll Exclusives And More, Second Edition" a 485 page hard covered book written by J. Michael Augustyniak, and published by Collector Books. This book "was designed to be a single-volume encyclopedia featuring every department store special, every Barbie doll exclusive, and every Collector Series Barbie doll and fashion released in the last 25 years. This second edition features over 500 additional dolls and 150 fashions not included in the first edition. It continues though the end of 1999 with Barbie's 40th anniversary and Millennium celebrations. Every one of these dolls and fashions from this quarter century is featured in this book, along with relevant information and each doll's stock number and current market value!" (as of 1999, so keep in mind that it is no longer anywhere close to current). Still, even without the pricing information this book is so helpful to anyone who buys or sells Barbie dolls. My copy has been well used; when I was actively collecting Barbies I referred to it very frequently. I highly recommend it.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I like this book because of the large pictures. They show doll features as well as all accessories that go with her outfits. The price was excellent since any Barbie book will one day become a collectable. I decided to buy this book because it covers newer dolls. It is hard to find a book on dolls older than the 80's. To my surprise this one has more photos than expected. All photo's are great quality.
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I was afraid it might be more like Augustyniak's Collector's Encyclopedia--covering dolls that were unaffordable or just not very interesting. However, what I personally really like about this book is that many of the dolls it covers are affordable, playline dolls. I bought this book because I am a second hand Barbie collector and I like to know what I found and added to my collection. I have already used it to identify several dolls, accessories, and clothing pieces. Many of the dolls it covers are playline dolls that were just exclusive to a particular store--or were repackaged as part of a store exclusive set. It features fashion packs too. Like many of Augustyniak's other books, there are some really nice facial close-ups. Unfortunately, not every doll has a facial close-up. Everytime I flip through this book, I feel more impressed. I have very few complaints. I don't like the amount of space at the back he devoted to "One of a Kinds". Also, in nearly all his books, I feel Augustyniak occasionally will include a photo that is irrelevant. For instance, he will through in a random celebrity doll in a book that is supposed to be focused on Barbie. He has a book for Mattel Fashion Dolls so I don't understand why he reuses pictures in places where they are irrelevant. I also don't like how he always goes by release date instead of box date--but that is a personal prefference. I really reccomend this book. It is interesting and informative and he includes a lot of fashion packs. I think it is a good book to own if you like Barbie because there is a sufficient variety of dolls to interest all sorts of collectors.Vollständige Rezension lesen
