1975 Rollerball movie on DVD starring James Caan
I recently purchased the 1975 Rollerball movie on DVD and I liked it. My reason for watching this movie was as a big fan of sci-fi movies and television shows from the late seventies to early eighties was to take a look at sci-fi movies that were made from about 1967 on up to 1977 so that I will have an idea of what sci-fi was like ten years before the original 1977 Star Wars movie came out. I have seen Space 2001, THX 1138 made during the early seventies by George Lucas and now the 1975 Rollerball movie and you can tell what a difference that Star Wars has made in terms of the special effects and the speed of sci-fi movies of today. If you are looking for robots, spaceships that fly at light speed and laser guns that shoot lasers then Rollerball is not that Star Wars kind of movie. The ... Yes, there is violence and the director was criticized for it back in 1975 when the movie came out according to the extra feature section that is provided on the DVD but it's not anywhere near the bloody violence that is shown in today's movies. The futuristic Rollerball contests are very violent and deadly makes one think about those days of Roman gladiators that fought each other to the death in ancient Rome. James Caan and John Houseman as usual turn in great performances. As a big 1979 Buck Rogers fan, I was interested in seeing Pamela Hensley in something other than Buck Rogers and you see her in scenes here and there. The movie has both the full screen and wide screen versions of the movie and I wish that all movies could be made this way when they come out of DVD.

Prophetic Movie
I have been meaning to see this 1975 movie practically all my life. I missed seeing it in the theater for some reason. It is not available for streaming or even rent the places I use. The notion of corporations running the world rather than countries seemed ridiculous at the time this movie was made. But now, more and more people are seeing how big corporations are now controlling voters, and conditioning them to believe certain things that a normal-thinking person would never believe. And on top of that, such corporations, including but not at all limited to social media corporations, are set up to distract us from noticing what is really going on, People are more addicted than ever to watch the endless sports games, which, best I can tell since so much money is involved, is fixed ... Baseball seems to be the most obvious, especially in how play-offs and world series stretch out the maximum number of games. Extreme sports is relatively new, and fits perfectly with the movie's main distraction, keeping people from being FREE.

Original Rollerball Is An Interesting Look Back
Every once in a while it is nice to watch a Sci-Fi movie that tried to show to one possible futuristic society and was made before any of today's special effects were available to movie makers. It is interesting to see how the writers in the 70's took such a jaundiced view regarding the eventual degradation of the planet into a population of drug addicted lemmings being controlled globally by a few colossal corporations after the elimination of national governments. This movie is for sports fans who truly feel that Soccer or Football is the way that world conflicts should be settled. It is also for those who see an Orwellian future still approaching us all. James Caan is his usual one dimensional bad-ass self bashing forward and leaving a trail of bodies and broken faces while trying to ... I found it easier to appreciate what the storytellers were trying to say without having to deal with the clutter of overwhelming special effects that seem to be mandatory for any big movies made today.

Excellent mid-70s futuristic bloodsport action-drama
A dystopian fantasy made 50 years ago that tries to depict basically the current timeframe. The buildings are stylish and euro-modern (including the BMW headquarters in Munich) and the plot images the rise of the internet, a powerful global elite of tech executives replacing nation states and establishing a utopia filled with a compliant population of followers needing a blood sport to keep them happy. The actual game of Rollerball is innovative, involving motorcycles, rollerskates and body armor. James Caan dominates the story as the super-achieving Jonathan, a counter-culture athlete so successful that he upends the reason for the brutal sport entirely and threatens the establishment. Great "Back in the Day" Movie
I had watched this movie after watching the remake, I actually almost turned it off in the first five minutes when I had to watch Jonathan (James Caan)steet luge/police chase. As I watched the movie, I realized that it blew the remake out of the water! What I didn't like about the movie was the "old" look, the flashing lights and terrible hair. Once you get past the lights and hair you realize that its got a great story line and tons of action. The action consists of motorcycles blowing up to heads beings smashed by steel balls.
