Having used the much cheaper Nikkor 70-300mm for a few years, mainly for wildlife photos, I decided to upgrade. I got great results with the old lens, but the 80-400mm is just next level. On the Nikon site, reviewers have commented that you shouldn't even think about buying this lens - just order it. They were right. Great detail, and with the extra magnification (it's on a D7100 DX body, so effectively 120-600mm) I can capture subjects nicely from greater distances. It's big and heavy, and I'm still getting used to the different center of gravity, but I'm really happy with the photos I've taken since it arrived.

This is a really great lens for a broad range of uses. bought this lens to photograph yacht racing and have found it to be even better than expected. The VR feature has allowed me to hand hold more often and still get sharp results. Although I didn't plan to use it to photograph my grandchildren I have found it perfect in many situations. I'm using it on a Nikon D3, D2x, F5 and I have even used it on my old F3hp. Although the vr and auto focus does not work on the f3 the lens still takes takes great photos. Fantastic product.

WOW ! I have been waiting YEARS for this lens.... Having owned the older "D" version 80-400mm for many years, this is what I have been waiting for. The older version was a great piece of glass except for the slow focus. Now that the lens has it`s own focus motor it is super fast and accurate. One nice added feature is they added a lock at 80mm to keep the lens from creeping out while on the move. As of this writing I just returned from the Ballestas Island national marine reserve off the coast of Peru in South America. You are not allowed to board the island so all photos must be done from your boat in choppy waters with 3-4 foot swells. Two years ago with the older "D" lens 3 or 4 out of every 10 were print quality due to the slow focus in the rough moving waters. This year armed with the new model lens it was 9 out of 10 and at least 70% gallery quality. In fact some of these photos will be seen next year in a gallery in Los Angeles. When out of the studio I do 90% of my work hand held and this lens was no issue for me and I have to admit I have not yet used this lens in a tripod, but Im sure it will preform great. Just remember to turn off the VR when using in a tripod. For a smaller person this might be a bit much for hand held shooting. Overall this is a high quality Pro level lens except for one thing. The Lens collar/foot for mounting to a tripod is a piece of garbage. Even worse than the first version. Nikon, What were you thinking ? SHAME ON YOU ! Before I ever took this lens out of the studio I put on the Really Right Stuff LC-A13 Package, Collar and foot to replace the junk it was shipped with. This is why I only gave 4/5 stars on Value for money. I know a lot of people have complained about the near $3,000.00 cost of this lens, but for me it was worth the wait and worth every dime and only 1/3 the cost of my 400mm f 2.8 and a heck of a lot lighter. PLUSES * Tack Sharp * Fast & Accurate focus * Excellent build quality * Creep lock at 80mm MINUSES * Lens Collar/FootVollständige Rezension lesen
Somewhat heavier than I was expecting, but so is my D850. Sharp and responsive. Thought I might miss the "G"- removed functions, but haven't remembered to, yet. Haven't had it long enough to say its durable, (also don't plan on dropping it!). I appreciate the extended range over my old 80-200 f4 which hardly ever came off my old D300, and its so MUCH HANDIER than my 200-400mm F4 to reach out with. Overall: VERY NICE!

First off, I bought this lens off eBay and it was pre-owned. For around $1,400 I am satisfied with it and have gotten some nice wildlife shots. Please see those attached...although they never seem to look as good when I post them somewhere. This is not a low light lens and to use it at 400mm on bleak days you have to crank up the ISO and even with the D750 I was getting a lot of noise. HOWEVER when we FINALLY got a sunny day I was very happy with the results I was getting. There is a learning curve to using this lens and it is - in my opinion - heavy. But I lug it around and am able to hand hold while shooting at what ever birds I can find for a couple hours or so. I have seen some photos taken with it that are absolutely amazing!!! I hope I can get that good. Much of the quality of the results the photographer will get depend on the users ability and skills and knowledge of the lens and camera they are using and their limitations. It is a nice lens and I am glad I made the purchase as it took my photography to a whole new level. It's not an f 2.8 or even an f 4 but it's very nice in great light and I love the zoom. The AF is very fast!!!Vollständige Rezension lesen
