This is the memoir of a young man (17 years old when the story begins) who enlisted into the RAF weeks before the outbreak of World War II. We follow Geoffrey's progress through the demanding early stages of his training: he was distinctly below average and was reminded of this continually. He was obviously a sensitive young man and pressure on him tells. As the war raged in the air over the channel, Geoffrey, by then an 18-year-old spitfire fighter pilot with minimal experience, was posted to a squadron based on the south coast. He remained here for two years and despite the appalling casualty rate - friends disappearing almost after every sortie - he became a brave, decorated fighter pilot. Running through the book are his inner feelings - angst, bravado, comradeship - and it is this powerfully evoked sense of self that is one of the most moving aspects of the book. Geoffrey describes his first flights in a spitfire, as well as his first experience of aerial battle and one dreadful sortie over the English Channel where his radio broke and he was coping with thunderstorm, cloud and German planes. Finally in the writing one begins to see, through small references at first, the effect on Geoffrey of this endless stress and tiredness. He began to doubt himself, things went wrong and finally he snapped.

Humble, Heartfelt, Absolute Bravery and Dedication at it's highest ........
If you are even faintly interested in Spitfires, it's Pilots. and the Battle of Britain in general, this book by one of the brave men who flew them is a must. Make no mistake, ALL these young pilots from wherever they came were most definitely the "Brave Few" and so very young they were too, boys rather than men, and even later when they all felt they had had to grow up and become men instead of boys very swiftly indeed, boys they still were in every respect, Geoff tells the riveting and frankly awe inspiring encounter of a massive combat engagement in the Battle of Britain that fading September summer of 1940, it is as tense and thrilling ( if that is the word ) as any film action, but this of course was only too real, and as he lands back at his airfield and tells of the emotional and ... The best autobiographical account from one who took part in the Battle of Britain, that I've read.
Over the years I've read many World War 2 aviation books of the autobiographical kind and have no hesitation in rating this one as exceptional. This is in terms of the author's lucidity and clearly excellent memory. His candour warrants special mention too. Highly recommended!

Superb
A honest and very captivating account of a time in our history when brave men fought so we could be free, the author was one of those brave men almost as good a story teller as he was a fighter pilot thanks "boy".

Essential reading about 'one of the few'.
Very readable true story about the RAF career of a wartime Spitfire pilot. He joined up to fly and not because of the impending war. He nearly didn't make it as a pilot, but ended up a modest, but true hero. Really interesting and true to life reminiscences .

First Flight . Describes it well
One of the best books I have ever read, the true story of the youngest pilot to fight in the battle of Britain its not jingoism. Its as it was, all the horrors that happened plus some of the lighter moments of war.
