Don Cheadle, playing juvenile detention teacher Pearl Madison, is the powerful centre around which a complex cast of characters revolves in the riveting drama THE UNITED STATES OF LELAND. A 16-year-old boy, Leland (Ryan Gosling), commits a murder, yet seems to have a normal sense of ethics and justice. He confesses his wrongdoing to his mother who turns him in to the police. What follows is a series of close-up character studies on all of the people impacted by Leland's actions. His mother (Lena Olin) is plagued with guilt, his father (Kevin Spacey)--a novelist who writes about violence in America--is complacent. Meanwhile, the family of Leland's victim is ripped apart at the seams, and his already troubled girlfriend (Jena Malone) drifts even farther astray. Director Matthew Ryan Hoge leads a brilliant cast through a cycle of moral questioning in which the characters try to understand Leland's motivations and how they will each cope with the irreversible circumstances of what he has done. A richly alluring pop soundtrack and colourful, dreamy photography pulls viewers into the film in its opening, after which the film transitions into deep philosophical conversations between the characters and takes on a much more serious tone. Fascinating in the questions it poses and impressive in its execution, THE UNITED STATES OF LELAND is a suburban family drama with lasting substance.

Because of the sadness
A good film. For me Spacey was the main draw because personally I had never heard of any of the other actors before, nor heard of the actual film. My loss. I saw this movie advertised on the trailer of another DVD and it gripped me enough to want to see it and it was a quality surprise. US of Leland is a well acted film with a decent plot and in depth rewarding characters. It centres around a seemingly normal teenager who inexplicably murders his girlfriends brother. It follows his story in the immediate aftermath, showing how the tragedy effects both his and the victims family, and how the authorities attempt to unravel his motive. This is no car chase laden, gunfight stuffed gratuitous action fest. This is a slow pyschological clever human drama. Despite producing the movie, Mr Spacey ... A good film. An emotional and rewarding watch.

Each of the main actors offered perhaps their best work to date, save Spacey (who's not exactly a novice). Special praise is due to Malone and Klein, two young performers who are better known for lighthearted comedy fare than the heavy drama of this movie. Another huge benefit in terms of the story is that none of the characters is flawless; none are heroes out to save the day.
