The English live under the iron rule of the Irish, and the young Tristan's parents are working to unite the tribes of England against their oppressors. When they are murdered by Irish infiltrators, Tristan is rescued by Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell, HELEN OF TROY), in whose kingdom he is raised as a son. Tristan (James Franco, SPIDER-MAN 2) grows up to be a valiant warrior and noble knight, and when he is felled in battle he is given a king's memorial, sent to sea in a boat that washes up on Irish shores. There, Tristan is revived and healed in secret by the beautiful Princess, Isolde (Sophia Myles), who at the insistence of her handmaiden doesn't tell Tristan her real name. The two beautiful young people inevitably fall in love, but their passion is cut short when Tristan is forced to flee home to England.Tristan eventually returns to Ireland to compete on Marke's behalf in a tournament for the Princess's hand in marriage, and only when he wins does he realize his error when he learns the Princess's true identity. Thus Isolde returns as Marke's bride, and, unable to deny their passion, the lovers take up a treacherous affair behind Marke's back. As Marke's enemies begin to suspect, they devise a plan to use Tristan's betrayal to break up the tenuous alliance between the English tribes.

Super great movie. Wonderful storyline. A+++
I loved it. James Franco was so good! Loved the great detailed storyline. Great Choice of Actors. Love the drawbridge up scenes. Well thought out. Franco really put himself in this role. Will watch again.

There's more than 1 approach
A really well made film (2006 issue in a DVD format) and the costume, prop, & makeup staff did an excellent job. Being a big fan of Wagner, I had to get this movie. I was somewhat disappointed because it didn't follow Wagner's personal notes too well but the story was adopted so it could make it in the big-screen circuit. Since the movie was created for this well-known "script" you can't fault that - only the subtle changes (which were probably required). At any rate, the story was given a new appearance that no one could have imagined 10 or more years ago. Parents should review the movie prior to viewing by school age children. Fantastic Epic tale! This movie is made for the romantics at heart. Two lovers fighting what is meant to be, what could be more tragic than that? The acting is incredible and the directors truly do a fantastic job bringing this world to life. If you are a hopeless romantic this movie is for you. Even my husband loved it thanks to all the incredible war scenes. Also, the extra's and commentaries are very enjoyable as you learn what it took to make such a realistic period film. I rented this movie from a video store the prior to purchasing it. I loved the story line and decided it should be a keeper. Started to buy it at Wal-Mart but changed my mind when I remembered to check it out on ebay. I happily was able to find a new copy there for considerably less than the purchase price at Wal-Mart. It was received in less than a week and I was thoroughly pleased! As far as the movie goes, it's like a cross between Romeo & Juliet and the King Arthur/Guinnevere/Lancelot story set back around Medieval times which was my major attraction to begin. Just a really good romantic/action movie.I rented this movie from a video store the prior to purchasing it. I loved the story line and decided it should be a keeper. Third times a charm
The case and cover were in good shape. The disk was is good shape with nothing on it. All was clean. This is the 3rd one of this movie I have gotten. Things happen and movies leave. Anyway, I am happy. Thank you
