A little 'dated', but still a great GPS unit!
I bought this model when it first came out, and am still using it! At the time I bought it, it was over $1000 - if I was happy with it at that price, you should *love* it at the prices they're going for now! :) You'll definitely want to upgrade the CF memory card to 2+ Gb, so it will hold the entire US map (the 2620 model comes standard with 2+ Gb and the entire US map pre-loaded). This GPS holds the entire US map down to the street level. It tells you via voice prompts when/where to turn. It is very good, but sometimes gets a little confused around very tight/densely-packed exits (don't we all? ;) You can pick your favorite language for the voice prompt. The GPS is only as good as the maps, of course! If you live in an area with a lot of road construction, you're gonna want to buy ... I bought this model when it first came out, and am still using it! They seem to be available about once a year - the first time they were $150, but this last time they were down to $75 (I anticipate the price of map updates will probably continue to drop, as GPSs become more common.) One thing I like about this GPS is it is fairly waterproof, and can be used on a motorcycle. It is a little big/bulky in size, compared to the latest Garmin GPSs (my neighbor just bought a new model Garmin, and it has a rechargeable battery, which seems like a good idea). ----- Oct 2007 update - just loaded the "2008" maps. The map update cost $75 again this year. Note that at some point, as the price of GPSs keeps coming down, the map updates are going to cost more than the hardware... Also note that the complete set of US maps would no longer fit on my 2Gb CF memory card, and I had to delete off Alaska & Hawaii. The software was kwirky (again), and I had to reboot my computer and start it a 2nd time. It took somewhere between 1 and 2 hours to transfer all the maps from the comptuer to the GPS unit (very slow USB-1 connection, I guess?). ----- August 2008 Update: I'm still using this GPS, and it's still working well.

Garmin StreetPilot® 2610 Car GPS Receiver
I had a Garmin GPS V which had quit acquiring satellites. Garmin said it would cost $125 to fix it. I found a factory refurbished StreetPilot 2610 on Ebay for $170 and decided it was time to upgrade to something more modern. The 2610 is the most basic model of their 26xx/27xx/28xx line of StreetPilots. It doesn't have dead reckoning, Bluetooth, play MP3s, integrate XM radio, etc. It's just a GPS and that's what I wanted. The 2610 has a touch screen and only 4 buttons. This allows the screen to be larger. The GPS has a bunch of customizable setup options available through the touch screen. One of the big features I liked is it can use a 2GB CompactFlash card and store all the maps for North America. It is programmable through a USB port. It is waterproof which is good since I ... Now I have to convert my vehicles to new power cables for this GPS. Update: Since using the 2610 on my motorcycle I have found a negative. The matte touch screen is horrible about washing out in sunlight or on a bright cloudy day. It works fine in my Jeep but not on the motorcycle. I have since started using a Garmin 276c on the motorcycle as it has a wonderful screen that doesn't washout.

Having only just moved to the US its made navigating in a new country relatively stress free. Pro's: 1.)Its easy to download maps and setup for personalized navigation. 2.)The 2610's menu options are clear and easy to operate for even the most techno illiterate people. 3.)It's large touchscreen allows for easy viewing and operation. 4.)Non invasive dash mounting making it perfect to move between vehicles. The 2610 is a very good tool for finding locations in an unfimilar area. I use it while I make deliverys and it has saves me a good deak of time. I have the version 7 software and have found some flaws in the program. It sometime will not find a street I enter and when I play with the menu area I will find it. I wish I had the newer system that has text to speech as I find the hearing make a turn in 400 feet becomes old real fast. I also would want the newer software version 8. All in all the system does what it is built to do once you learn how to program it. The screen is easy to read day and night. The mounting system works great.
