Honoring The Feminine Mystique
Unfortunately the Internet Movie Datbase doesn’t feel there are memorable quotes from controversial French director Catherine Breillat’s stunning, mythological adaptation to her novel called Pornocracy, which is not about feminism but feminine mystique, and christened Anatomy of Hell. I lucked out when an appreciative Amazon viewer appended this memorable quote to his review, spoken calmly by the anonymous woman : "That's what men can't stand. It's why they've tried to lock women up, in all eras, all places, under every latitude. To protect us from ourselves, they say. To break the spell of women. In fact...they're afraid women don't belong to them. They don't believe in basic freedom. They threaten us with belts, padlocks, their concept of chastity, their foolish morals, since they ... The anonymous man had just walked through the open door of her isolated beach house on one of the four nights of their exploratory relationship and accused her of carelessness. As she sprawls nakedly over the anonymous man’s reclining clothed body on the bed, her soft yet strong words etch into his mind. I think you can see why. She had met him at a gay nightclub and deliberately ‘touched’ him as they passed on the stairs. This aroused his curiosity about the sad figure and he followed her to the bathroom where she was slitting her wrists. This gentleman, after taking her to a doctor for bandaging, slaps her face while walking her home. She had asked him why he came to the bathroom. Wasn’t he like all men who go there to get his d*ck sucked? Not much later he doesn’t protest when she releases his very erect penis and gives him an orgasm. Perhaps he’s raging inside and needs her to do this. Perhaps he’s bisexual. Or maybe he thinks it makes him more of a man to her. Then she offers to pay him a lot to watch her at her most ‘unwatchable’ at home. She wants to know what he sees and he doesn’t need to touch her. He accepts and it’s the beginning of his tumultuous journey into the world of a serenely beautiful woman, one who takes all of his hostility, disgust and honesty (for example, he compares her skin to a frog who at least has the decency to be green) and lets him do sexually what he wants with her (there’s no S & M or anything hurtful). He cries, he broods while gazing over the crashing waves, he draws a red Joker smile on her and around her vagina while she sleeps. I promise you he does much more and it may upset some of you. She has her period and lets him pull out her used Tampon that she then drops in water and gives it to ’her enemy’ to drink. She will ask finally if she lost her dignity by showing him her fertile blood that causes women to be seen as impure. He has no words. He had plenty at first, but finds that she talks too much and then how difficult it is to ignore her or to answer her. It calls for action. Please don’t think Anatomy of Hell is a battle of the sexes; it is a shared passage into humanity and candid intimacy. Don’t think it is about hating men and seeking revenge; the woman mirrors the figure of crucified Christ above her on the empty wall. And don’t think the man and woman represent a gay man and straight woman; they symbolize the first man and woman after their eyes have been opened and they’ve been thrown out of paradise. Anatomy of Hell
This film is just plain awful.I bought it because the leading actress was featured nude in Celebrity Skin magazine.Upon watching it,I was disgusted by her noticeable underarm hair.And that's the least disgusting thing about this movie!This film is subtitled and comes with a disclaimer about some scenes being offensive,but it should have just said that the whole film is offensive.I spent a lot of money on this DVD,and I really feel like I got ripped off.This film is just plain awful.I bought it because the leading actress was featured nude in Celebrity Skin magazine.Upon watching it,I was disgusted by her noticeable underarm hair.And that's the least disgusting thing about this movie!This film is subtitled and comes with a disclaimer about some scenes being offensive,but it should have just said that the whole film is offensive.I spent a lot of money on this DVD,and I really feel like I got ripped off.
