Could have been excellent..........................
........................but marred by incidental music over important conversations. An important story. A compelling story. Totally engaging. The book differs from the film slightly but I am sure the real story differs from the book slightly. Read the book first and it will increase your understanding of the nuances in the film. Wonderfully acted.

A slow moving film conveying the repression of the time.
It follows the book very closely, apart from a few changes. I thought it was too slow moving, but it did convey the terror of living under the regime of Nazi Germany if you weren't a party member. There must have been a large minority of people who were opposed to the politics of the time, and this film conveys their powerlessness to kick against the constraints imposed. I would recommend this film to anyone seeking a greater knowledge of the atmosphere created by the Third Reich during those years.It follows the book very closely, apart from a few changes. A bit like looking in a mirror seems to be happening now in 2021/22
Seems slow to start but very subtle and shows exactly what happens with no honest freedom of speech and particularly Free press. Also shows how easy it is to fail to protect democracy, inch by inch - do not resist this - don't look at that - too busy to stop and scrutinise the bigger picture. Seduced by luxury/comforts today to worry about losing everything tomorrow. For democracy to die all that is needed for good men to stand aside and do nothing!.Seems slow to start but very subtle and shows exactly what happens with no honest freedom of speech and particularly Free press. heavy subject, not for folk who like a happy ending - a warning from history.
A really good film with a fantastic cast. How did they do that knowing they would get caught and be put to death by one of the most repressive states the world has seen. And sadly we seem to have learned nothing from it as a race of beings.
