I have, since grade school enjoyed this mans work. Now I have his music in one place (CD). I can listed over and over. Not only all his music, but the man himself conducting his own music. I would loved to have met him, and possibly studied under him. I don't ever remember not liking any of his music.

My mother- a near-concert-level pianist when she was young- mastered several of Anderson's works. As a result, this CD has some sentimental value to me as well as being a great chronology of the composer/director's work. The CD contains five songs of which I was unaware, but all share Anderson's gift of evoking musical imagery. Some audiophile purists may balk that the CD is mainly in monoaural, with only 3 out of 20 songs in stereo (2 channel). The CD has been digitally remastered from Decca recording sessions in the 50's and early 60's. Leroy Anderson was an exceptionally gifted composer and music director. He had a knack for creating pictures out of music. Oh sure, the standards and classical works evoke certain FEELINGS in the mind of the listener, whether light and lyrical or thundering (or anything in between). But Anderson went a step further- he created very SPECIFIC IMAGES in the mind's eye, whether a cat, a clock or office equipment! Almost everyone has heard "Sleigh Ride" (in an original arrangement with the Boston Pops, or in any of a number of "cover" versions) at Christmastime, wherein you "see" a group out for a ride in the snow, complete with bells, horse's hooves clopping, and even a horse whinny courtesy of the trumpet. Some of us can remember "The Syncopated Clock", which was used as the theme song for "The Late Show" (late night movie) for over 20 years. His "Plink, Plank, Plunk" was the theme song of the old TV game show "I've Got a Secret". You've heard of "air guitars" where someone pretends he's playing a riff on his invisible six-string? Well, comedian Jerry Lewis in the movie "Who's Minding the Store", perfectly strokes on his "air Underwood" to the tune of Anderson's "The Typewriter". [You can see Lewis and hear the song on YouTube]. His "Blue Tango" was the first instrumental piecce to sell a million copies and "go gold". All these songs- and many others- were from Leroy Anderson. Augmenting a full orchestra under Anderson's creative direction for his pieces were such innovative "instruments" as sticks, wood blocks, the BACKS of violins, tuned doorbells, a cowbell, three grades of sandpaper, and- of course- even a typewriter for the song of the same name! So, some day when you've had enough "reality television", turn off the tube, close you eyes, and picture Leroy Anderson's amazing imagery in your minds' eye!Vollständige Rezension lesen
I'm old enough to remember and love the music of Leroy Anderson. Most of you are not - except for a Christmas song or two. More's the pity! He was the greatest composer of semi-classical (by today's standards) music whom I have ever heard in my lifetime, which stretches back a considerable way! I have purchased a few of his compilations on disc over the years, but this is absolutely the best!! It includes almost all of his favorite tunes - although, I have to admit that one disc would never be enough to hold them all. On this disc, all the cuts are conducted by the composer himself, and most are original recordings. Not only is this disc absolutely essential for old geezers like me who remember Anderson when he was still cranking 'em out in his prime, but it is a must buy for youngsters (GenX and Y, etc.) who believe that music began and ended with Three Days Grace (whoever they are). Those youngsters might learn something about real music before it was reduced to noise! If you are lucky enough to find this for sale these days, treat yourself to some of the best of music when it was real music! You'll never be sorry, and if you live to be an old geezer like me, you will have long since thrown your Three Days Grace discs into the garbage, but the music of Leroy Anderson will always seem new and exciting!Vollständige Rezension lesen

Just love hearing these memorable songs--each a mind-picture with such special effects. Bands love to play them, and people still love to hear them. How delightful that these songs are directed by Anderson himself. It is true that the typewriter and sleigh are things of the past, but the vision is still there!
Excellent CD. Easy listening-I have it in my car. Works wonders in traffic! Musicians are top flight and the selections are tops.
