Pros - Great strategy game. Massive scale both in timeframe and nations involved. Plays even better than EU 1 and 2. Interface is smooth, graphics are o-kay...not great but good enough for a "thinking" game. Cons - Had trouble getting the tutorials to load. Not a biggee since I was already familiar with the EU 1 & 2 interfaces but, if EU 3 is your first venture into this realm...it could be a problem. FYI - If your looking for a first person shooter...this in NOT your game. It is a deep and richly entertaining chance to be a King or Emperor of a historical world power. Try your hand at guiding your nation and building an empire...or die trying at the hand of your enemies. To sum up - I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys massive scale grand strategy games. If you love ... Pros - Great strategy game. Massive scale both in timeframe and nations involved. Patience is a Virtue
I play this game about an hour a day. I started my first game on March 25, it is now May 7 and I'm about 80% of the way through. So if you're only a fan of quick hitting action games, then don't buy this game. However, if you like strategy, problem solving, and 'Civilization' type games, then this one is a keeper. It's an interesting game that I will probably pull out once a year or so, and play it for a month, month and a half, like I have this time. It's not perfect. There is plenty of room for more intricacy and detail. And with no story and no stated goal I'm afraid I will be left feeling a bit incomplete when my time expires. If you're looking for a grand strategy game with details galore and historical accuracy to boot, you need go no further. If, on the other hand, you're looking for light strategy, action, or RTS, I highly suggest you find another title. The Good - Using a historic earth, you can start your game anywhere between 1400 and 1800, playing as any of over a hundred nations spanning the globe, and, if you choose, conquer or colonize the entire world. Play the Frech superpower, play the backward Aztecs, or play the tiny nation of Hamburg inside what *may* become Germany. - The game is historically very accurate -- far better than any game I've seen before. Nothing is perfect, of course, but this comes close. - Many fan-made mods are available to tweak the game further. Want difficulty and even ... Try Magna Mundi. - Extremely complex internal politics model, detailed external politics, warfare, and economic concerns make for a plethora of options. Grand strategy for certain. - The game models the reasons why countries made the choices they did. Thus, if YOU come along and change things, the AI will react accordingly, but plausibly. - Random factors make the game non-deterministic (the game never plays quite the same twice), but strategy still rules over randomness. - Multiplayer allows you to conquer or help your RL friends, or just meet people online and play with a more intelligent commander at your rivals' command. - Freeform and open. Do you conquer your neighbors? Play neutral? Dominate trade? Unify Italy? Convert the heathens? Colonize the New World? It's up to you. - Replayability. If you could only choose 1 nation to start, it would still be a new challenge each game. But you're not limited in nation, region, religion, or even continent. Possibilities are virtually endless. - Historical situations. You can start in the middle of Sengoku Jidai (the high age of Samurai and war in Japan), take control of Napoleon's forces, subjugate the New World, or many other possibilities. The Bad - Learning Curve. There is one, and it's a doozy. A tutorial exists, but it is woefully inadequate for all of the many factors you must keep your eye on. The only real way to learn is by playing, failing, and replaying. - The graphics. They're not bad, but they're not astoundingly good, and, more importantly, they require cards with pixel shader 2, which, for essentially no good reason, makes the game unplayable on older computers. - The AI. Once you've got a handle on all of the various complexities, you'll likely find that the game is too easy. There are many reasons for this (including historical accuracy!), but difficulty can be modified to mitigate this somewhat. Again, Magna Mundi increases the difficulty at least threefold! - Lack of real goals. The game ends in 1820 or so... but did you win? That's up to you to decide. No medals for being richest, no cut scene for dominating the globe. All you've got is yourself, history, and the records of other players to compare against. Europa Universalis III is a great game for someone who can handle deep complexity and an incredible learning curve. There are two official expansions which augment the game, both combined with the base in the EU III "Complete" version. Randomness combined with a plethora of choices both within a country and in choosing a country to start with make for virtually infinite replayability. Just be prepared to be destroyed in your first few games!

Best strategy game ever played in recent year
I bought this game (complete edition) after I played the original EU III. The complete edition has added many new features that I loved. The added features such as the new spy abilities and extended timeline made this game more playable, and this game can be played on windows vista as well as XP. The only thing that troubles me is the requirement for the computer components since I usually use my laptop, and I have to wait for quite some time for the game to load the maps and bountaries (didn't take that long while I played with my desktop at home). An option for a lower level of visual effects might be favored by some gamers who do not have good computers, and I don't think it's necessary to lower the visual effect of the game as a whole (many other PC games require even more upgrades ... Another thing I should mention is that any switching between the game and the desktop once the game is initiated will lead to nonresponding of the game, and it happens too when I used my desktop. I guess it's because of the extensive amount of ram the game has been using to load the game.(once initiated, changes lead to non-fuctioning). Unlike some strategy games which requires fast and immediate control of the troops in the battlefield like Civilization, EU III allow the player to pause and spend some time thinking of the strategy from a higher point of view. As a strategy game player, I totally recommend this game to players who prefer slower pace and more thinking.

Good game, could have been a great game.
Far too many pop ups. Too many revolts and too many pirates took much of the fun out of it. Much the same as "Crusader II except a bit simpler. If they made it simpler still, it would be a great game.
