"Everything affects everything," declares Hannah Baker, who killed herself two weeks ago. After her death, Clay Jensen-who had a crush on Hannah-finds seven cassette tapes in a brown paper package on his doorstep. Listening to the tapes, Hannah chronicles her downward spiral and the 13 people who led her to make this horrific choice. Evincing the subtle-and not so subtle-cruelties of teen life, from rumors, to reputations, to rape, Hannah explains to her listeners that, "in the end, everything matters." Most of the novel quite literally takes place in Clay's head, as he listens to Hannah's voice pounding in his ears through his headphones, creating a very intimate feel for the reader as Hannah explains herself. Her pain is gut-wrenchingly palpable, and the reader is thrust face-first into a world where everything is related, an intricate yet brutal tapestry of events, people and places. Asher has created an entrancing character study and a riveting look into the psyche of someone who would make this unfortunate choice. A brilliant and mesmerizing debut from a gifted new author. -Kirkus, starred review, "Heavy but compelling. . . . Asher's novel asks us to look at how petty cruelty can deal crushing blows."  -- Miami Herald "Wonderfully realistic in his writing, Asher offers teens and parents alike a great story on an important topic."  -- Green Bay Press-Gazette "It is a brilliant debut that will leave readers feeling a sense of remorse for Hannah, guilt for Clay, and hope for the lasting lesson of the story."  -- Bookazine "Breakneck pace and dizzying emotion."  -- School Library Journal "[Hannah's] pain is gut-wrenchingly palpable. . . . • I recommend this to teens and adults

I thought this was very good for YA fiction. I generally don't read YA but this one caught my interest so I perused it as it came across my desk got interested and read it. I found it to be very heartfelt and at the same time a very unique premise for a book. I could see it would be easy for someone who was struggling with some of the same problems and feelings of isolation to relate to this book. I thought it was sad but hard to put down, compelling. It was well written, but parts I thought could have done better or I'd have given it full marks. It does, however, get credit for not putting the blame of suicide solely onto other people(as you might assume from the title) but acknowledges that people are still responsible for their own actions even if things get out of control. Read ...

  • Why Would a Classmate Commit Suicide?

I'm a senior citizen. When I was in high school, kids who committed suicide were either romantic or scary. We never really knew what they were thinking, so we made up stories about it. This, too, is a made-up story, but it feels real. It tells the story of why one girl commits suicide without being romantic or scary. It tells of her interactions and relationships with her classmates in such a way as to encourage readers to be more compassionate. Yes, there's the prurient interest factor -- why did she do it? would I ever do it? But the girl's voice is not the only one telling the tale. The story is tempered by the reactions of a boy who tried to be her friend. This boy is the true narrator. His feelings as he discovers the journey that led this girl to suicide along with ...

  • Thirteen Reasons Why - Extraordinary Book!

This book was so good I read it in 3 days time. I don't like books much, but once I started this book, I couldn't stop until I had to force myself to! It is very interesting on why Hannah Baker actually committed suicide, and there are 13 people who influenced this decision. Each chapter is so great and enjoyable and catches your eye and attention. I recommend this book for people who like to read about death, or suicide and reasons why, or something like it. Very interesting book. Get this book for you! Extremely well written.. Highly Recommended for ALL! It is really a great book and why Hannah really killed herself. Although I don't agree on why she killed herself, because some of the reasons will slightly not that hard to deal with, but you get the understanding of what a suicidal ...

  • One Of The Best Books I've Read!

I did not know what to expect when first picking up "Thirteen Reasons Why", but what I found when I began to read the book was something amazing! I literally could not sit the book down, I believe I finished it in two days. The situations were so real, and It really made me start wondering who in my life do I know that could be feeling like the lead character Hannah Baker. The book was interested, quite sad, and unbelievable but at the same time Honestly reality. I would recommend the book to any High School student, or High School student's parent, this could be a good book for a parent and child to read at the same time. Get two copies, read it and talk about it like a book club.

  • Shockingly accurate and life changing book. Amazing price!

I found this book at my school library and checked it out because it seemed interesting and I saw the reviews from other readers inside the book that talked about how the book "changed their lives". I started reading right away and what seemed like two minutes later, I already read 70 pages. The book sucks you into a thriller-like pace and you'll never want to put it down. This book connected to me so well because I was once considering suicide. Everything Hannah Baker talks about is how I once felt. It was really shocking to me because I thought I was the alone when it came to that kind of stuff. But this book really opened my eyes. I think it should be mantatory to read this novel. It's so moving. I loved this book so much, I bought my own copy to lend to other people.
