seminal album years ahead of it's time, still sounds fresh over 20 years on, buy a copy if you can, highly recommended
I bought Duck Rock for time machine purposes. And also because it's fun to hear that magic little thiefbag Malc helping himself to the (then) newist of rap. I was also amazed at the confidence of the American teenagers, spitting out their musical, pithy sentences ("Yaw nowwit" and "Oh-that-scratch-is-makin'-me-itch") which compared horribly to my teenage pronouncement: "um. I quite like the cover" when made to listen to The Last Poets. (Yes, DO chek-um-ahhht bruv-va, because they were the beginning) Duck Rock marked the end of my being a stupid idiot, pretending to like ELO because everyone else did, and working in a card shop.
Purchased to replace a long lost original, chasing a mis-spent youth. Malcolm McLaren is always innovative and never afraid to probe new boundaries, and Duck Rock was no exception. A curious fusion of New York street beat and South African inspired protest folk, laced with a smidgin of redneck, and garnished with a faux DJ narration. You will probably listen to it tongue in cheek the first time, but beware, this album grows on you. It is undoubtedly enjoyable, and serves as an ideal aide memoire for those who wish to trip back to the late 1980's, for whatever reason.
Always loved the rebelious nature of Malcolm McLaren even prior to the formation of the Sex Pistols in 1976. The man was a genius at every thing he ever did. Originally had and lost this CD to someone who borrowed it then lost it!! However so pleased to have it back in my collection again (won't ever let anyone borrow any of my CD's again!!!!!)
