Having some 200 books on the subject of WWII with a focus on the European conflict and the Third Reich, the book opened a window onto an aspect of the Holocaust that I had not encountered in any detail previously.The book brought to light the efforts of Jewish resistance in the face of the Nazi racial war of annhilation with its focus on the young leaders of resistance in Eastern Europe, the inseparable trio of Abba Kovner,Ruzka Korczak, Vitka Kempner. Forced into Lithuania's Vilna Ghetto and alerted to the German plans to murder its Jewish inhabitants,the three struggle against both the Nazi oppressors and the reticence of their fellow Jews to rise up and take arms against their killers. It is sad to see how hope, hope that if they cooperated and served a purpose through productive work, ... Seeing all too clearly, the three young people overcome incredible odds merely to survive and then to strike back at the vast German machine as members of the partisans who through sabotage and behind the lines fighting helped win the battle against the Third Reich. Again it is sad to see that often as not the non-Jewish partisans and the local people themselves thought of the Jews much in the same light as the Nazis. For a bag of sugar, peasants often turned Jews over to the Germans. The other aspect of the book captures the unique relationship between the three young people, a moving account of their love for each other, their determination in the face of insurmountable obstacles, and their effots "not to go like sheep to the slaughter." Over 140,000 Lithuanian Jewish men,women and children. 3,000,000 Polish Jews would die at the hands of the Germans, some 80% of the Polish Jews. A chilling aspect of the book recounts efforts by the three to extract vengance against the Nazis after the war had ended, for their war had not ceased as they saw their people's murderers escape justice. Then there is the transition to life for the three in the land of Israel post-war and pre-independence, their struggles continuing. As the writer Rich Cohen was related to Ruzka and thereby gained entry into her world and story, he was able to personally meet "The Avengers" over a period of years, and thus was able to produce what I consider an important, highly readable and highly recommended book. Terrific book
Compelling, and moving read. It is hard to comprehend the hardships these folks went through. It is also hard to comprehend the hate and callousness that the human race can be guilty of. I sit in my comfortable chair, in my safe home and city, with absolutely no fear of marauding armies, pograms, or fascist (or communists or any other brand of authoritarian government) breaking down my door. And I read of people and a time when that was almost the norm, especially for the Jews of Europe. Boggles my mind, breaks my heart, and makes me thankful for where I live. Anyway, simply a fantastic book, well written, and very readable. Finished in a few sittings....it was hard to put down.Compelling, and moving read. I'd use different verbage as to me it sounded like something from a comic book (aka Marvel Comics).
Haven't quite read it yet but others had who recommended it to me! This should be taught to our children that we Jews are not "sheep". We will stand up if we are pushed enough. Perhaps more now than ever before!

A true story authentically told
I went to the ghetto in Vilnius and the forest where the Kovna Group established themselves. This book was the impedus for me to make that effort. Very well written.
