I'll admit, I've drunk the Kool Aid where "Firefly" and this movie are concerned. "Firefly" died well before it's time. As this movie proves. Fast paced dialogue, hilarious one liners, great action sequences coupled with great performances by the main cast, though special mention should go to Summer Glau for her portrayal of River Tam. The way she can switch from the wide eyed innocent mentally fragile girl to an almost unstoppable warrior is breathtaking to watch. The real strength of this movie comes, not from the action sequences but from the quiet character moments. Like the one between River and her brother Simon, the self-appointed protector of his baby sister, or Mal and Shepard Book. The ending did feel a bit rushed to me, and I was saying quite literally "That's it?" The only real negative thing to say about this movie is that there probably won't be a sequel, it did poorly at the box office, but as with "Firefly" before it it's the little movie that could picking up a lot of fans via DVD. If you haven't seen this movie yet, I suggest you either rent it or do yourself a favor and buy it. You won't be sorry.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Yes, you will laugh, cry and be amazed by this movie based on the little show that could. One of my favorite shows ever and it only lasted a season - not a complete seasons since the Fox did not air all of the episodes ): After the Earth was depleted of its natural resources other planets were terra-formed to sustain life. Like on Earth, the planets were divided by money and politics. The "haves" are tech advanced, the "have nots" live in pioneer condition - hence the western themes. The Alliance (core planets government) decides to unify all planet but the outer planets do not want to be under their control. So civil war breaks out. Guess who wins. So a couple of Browncoats (as the rebels were called) and crew fly a Firefly transport ship called Serenity. Even though they are thieves, scavengers and malcontents they are still the heroes. The Firefly series ended with the crew having found out that little River is actually a weapon made by the government. Serenity is set months after the series left off. The crew is still doing their thing - robbing payrolls, dodging the Alliance who is looking for River and trying to keep Serenity in the air. The special effect have always been incredible - even the series was known for the great chase scenes. The ship is a marvel. In HD they just POP! Excellent writing, witty and smart. Love the actors, all of them - well, maybe not so much the Inara character, she always bugged me for some reason. Only thing that could have made it better was the series' theme and the Ballad of a Man Called Jayne were not in movie. Hey, and Jayne's hat would have been cool too. Highly recommended even if you have not seen the series. This movie stands well on its own. But check out the series, it is excellent!Vollständige Rezension lesen
My wife (sadly) hates Sci-fi, but even she grudgingly admitted this was a great movie. I missed the Firefly series that this was based on, but this movie stands on it's own. It has a good plot, character development, action, and humor. In fact, this movie is so good compared to Lucas' most recent offerings that you will find yourself wondering how he managed to screw up the SW franchise so badly. Whedon makes it look easy with Serenity. Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau and the rest of the cast get to make their characters seem real and engaging. There's a quirky space-cowboy aspect to the dialog that actually works well, especially with Fillion and Baldwin. This is simply a great, entertaining movie. Enjoy. Note: I just bought the Firefly series on DVD and am looking forward to getting into it next.Vollständige Rezension lesen
As a fan of the TV show Firefly, I had high expectations for the Serenity movie. The movie lived up to the show's history, with a few unexpected turns to make this Firefly fan say, "What?! Why?!". I won't spoil the movie for those of you who have not seen it, but I will prepare you to expect a few good gun battles, hand-to-hand combat, a quaint love interest, and many "uncomfortable" moments for the main characters. The HD movie release provides a good evening of entertainment and was an excellent purchase for me. For anyone else who jumped on the wrong band-wagon and purchased an HD DVD player instead of Blu-Ray, the Serenity HD movie is a nice item to add to your collection.
Best Sci-Fi movie to come along yet. Great casting, good story, exceptionally entertaining. The perfect finish to a great series. The actors were directed well, and the end result is a film that shows humans with advanced technology are still humans, and that not all humans will embrace the use of technology when it is available. It also shows that human ethics remained the same, the black and white of right and wrong balanced on a laser blade. And in spite of advanced technology, the bottom is still deep when you fall off either side...
