Be prepared to be scared. James Wan's directorial debut, written by and starring Leigh Whannell, is a violent, bloody, psychologically exhausting and exhilarating exercise in terror. Adam (Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) are chained in a vile, disgusting bathroom, separated by a bloody corpse holding a gun and a tape recorder. They are each given a saw--the only obvious way out is to cut one of their feet off. A serial killer who specialises in torturing morally bereft strangers is playing a game with them: Gordon has less than eight hours to kill Adam or else the doctor's wife (Monica Potter) and daughter (Mackenzie Vega) will be murdered. As the two men engage in a battle of wits, alternately trying to help each other and secretly attempting to win the game, a series of flashbacks reveals the history of the madman and the pair of detectives (Danny Glover and Ken Leung) handling the case. Some of the torture scenes are excruciatingly horrible and hard to watch, a real treat for fans of the genre. Inspired by the work of David Lynch (BLUE VELVET, TWIN PEAKS) and Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA, INFERNO), Wan has created a scintillating suspense thriller that will have audiences continually shocked, repelled, frightened, and surprised, right up to the very last second (which Whannell has said was influenced by the endings of such films as THE USUAL SUSPECTS and THE SIXTH SENSE). The accompanying heavy metal soundtrack is appropriately scary as well.

A good story behind them all

Much more intelligent than the title suggests
I've got to say i was suprised by how good this film turned out to be. The title suggests it's going to be a bloodbath but in actual fact, it delivers suspense, action, horror, thrills, spills and an ingenious twist to lift this head and shoulders above most films in the genre. The story is simple enough, a photographer and a doctor wake up in a delapidated room, chained to the walls, with a dead body in the middle of the floor and are given instructions on how to get out via a tape recorder left in the room. Their only supplied instrument is a saw. The film's structure is similar to Reservoir Dogs, the events taking place last only an hour or so and the story is filled out through flash backs. As the film progresses, we're given more information about the victims, how they got there, ... I've got to say i was suprised by how good this film turned out to be. The title suggests it's going to be a bloodbath but in actual fact, it delivers suspense, action, horror, thrills, spills and an ingenious twist to lift this head and shoulders above most films in the genre. As the film progresses, we're given more information about the victims, how they got there, and the motives of the psychopath who orchestrated the whole messy affair. I was expecting a low rent gore-fest but got a sophisticated thriller in the mould of Se7en. Visual presentation is nothing less than excellent thoughout the film and there are some particularly stylish moments here and there. The flashback sequences really drove the story forward, adding little twists and tidbits of valuble information. For the squeamish, there are some pretty nasty bits, but nothing that will make your stomach churn. The best however, is most definitely saved for last, the climax is great and i didn't see it coming what-so-ever. Full marks.

About time a good horror film was made. Saw is just that. What would you be willing to do to survive? Victims awaken and find themselves in situations where they have to choose whether to live or die. This intense film goes deep into your worst fears and shakes your core. You awaken in a dark room. You hear a voice from the darkness. You have to do what the voice says in so much time or you will die in an awful way. You do not know where you are. Or why you are there. All you know is that if you do not do as the voice says, you will die a painful death. What would you do? A killer is on the loose like no other killer as the victims are the ones who actually end up killing. You have to watch it to believe it..Fantastic Movie.About time a good horror film was made. “…he wants us to saw through our legs…..”. This actually starts to sound not so bad by the time you’ve seen about twenty minutes of the film. Saw gives Channel 5’s Plastic Surgery Live a run for its money on gruesome scenes of extreme physical violence that make your spine tingle. But is it only a big screen version of Plastic Surgery Live? No. You’ll be pleased to hear its far better. I’ve heard a lot of people comparing Saw to Seven. I’ve never liked comparing a new film to another as a way of categorizing or rating it. Firstly, the film used as the comparison is usually a good film that a lot of people know and like so you’re already setting the bar high for the new film. But the worst thing about such comparisons is that they are inevitably misleading. Yes, there are similarities ... “…he wants us to saw through our legs…..”. Folks get killed in both movies, but don’t go to see Saw expecting Seven. It’s not as good. It’s a scary movie that expertly plays on some traditional and commonplace fears. Put your hand up if you’re scared of the dark, or evil clowns, or extreme physical torture. All these and more feature, employed within the wider plot to unsure that you’re never relaxed or able to eat your popcorn! This wider plot is somewhat sacrificed in order to cram as much horror in as possible. From a horror movie I don’t expect much else and to be fair it does keep you guessing until the very end. For all those of you out there that like to spoil films for yourselves by trying to guess the end or the next twist, I guarantee you wont get this one. The films plot flaws are not apparent while you are watching, its only afterwards while your thinking about it, alone, in the dark, checking the lock on your front door, that the things that don’t add up or were not fully explained become apparent. So you can’t count this against the film as it in no way affects how much you enjoy watching it. However, what does effect your enjoyment of the film are some of the acting turns. Cary Elwes, playing doctor Lawrence Gordon is a little ropey in parts of the film that you need him to be solid in order to keep you scared. What director James Wan so nearly achieves with Saw is the bridge between the straight forward shock slasher pic, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacreand the more involved slow burning psychological film, such as The Shining. It falls down because the performances don’t allow you to care enough about the pawns in the killer’s game. But how often do you identify with the characters in horror movies? I know that I spend a lot time hurling abuse at the fool that refuses to take a bat with him to the cellar. And I’m regularly pleased when the schmuck is finally put out of his misery. Darwinism in practice. Saw is not a clever thriller, it’s a horror and what its missing in suspense it makes up for with splatter! People get it in some nasty and truly ingenious ways! Saw is a film that scared me in the cinema and made me make sure the wardrobe door was shut when I went to bed that night! Its no masterpiece but it gets at least three and half chainsaws out of five.
