This documentary explains to some extent how Miami was turned into an international hotspot into an area full of night clubs, large buildings and fancy restaurants. It all, or mostly, came from the cocaine trade and made Miami what it is today. This film explains just how this area in Florida was turned into a major industry. See it if you can and ignore the sequel.

I've seen Scarface several times and I remember watching Miami Vice as a kid thinking how cool it would be to be in Miami, the way that Don Johnson glamorized chasing down drug dealers and drug kingpins. Well, as I got older, that coolness faded with the show, and I'm sure if I had seen this movie I would've had a completely different view on what I thought of Miami back in the 80's. This movie is part documentary and part reenactment, pretty much what you'd probably see on the Discovery channel, or possibly the History channel. It shows a lot of actual clips from TV news coverage back in the late 70's to early 90's, but mostly there are a lot of interviews of what life was like for coke smugglers, dealers, kingpins, and enforcers. It gives an honest view of what was really happening during these cocaine wars, where innocent victims like children were killed, and kingpins like the 'Cocaine Godmother' were the ones ordering hits like that. Cocaine Cowboys starts out showing how it all started with guys moving down to Miami with little money, and within weeks they were making tens of thousands of dollars which multiplied into hundreds of thousands and then millions. They did this by meeting drug runners who then got them into the business flying down to Columbia and back transporting first marajuana, which eventually became almost unsellable because of demand (or lack thereof), and then cocaine, which they couldn't get enough of to fill demand. They did this for a few years without any incidents, everyone was making money and Miami went from a poor city to a flourishing metropolis almost overnight due to all the money being made from the coke. The movie then moves in a bunch of different directions with people moving to Miami just to partake in their part of the drug enterprise. It focuses quite a bit on the drug hits and what law enforcement had to do to slow down the distribution of drugs. The movie is shocking at times, as cons, ex-cons, policemen, reporters, and attorneys are quite frank in their depiction of what they actually did and saw during this crazy period in U. S. history. I've seen Scarface several times and that movie almost seems like a fairy tale compared to what happens in Cocaine Cowboys, although Miami now flourishes mainly because of all the blood money that the Columbian drug cartel extracted from drug users and invested back into Miami through construction and real estate, but I'm sure the dwellers in Miami could've used a lot less bloodshed in exchange for economic wealth. The numerous murders caused by the drug wars are kind of astounding when compared to what happened with the mafia, but the amount of money that was laundered through banks and such is equally astounding. I totally recommend this movie to anyone who likes real life events such as stuff you see on the Discovery channel, it's kind of similar to the FBI Files which I used to watch every Tuesday night for a few years (I'm not sure if that show is on anymore). I also recommend this movie to fans of Scarface and movies like that, because it gives a more honest depiction of what actually happened in Miami back then.Vollständige Rezension lesen
It's a must watch! Plus it has Jan Hammer that made the soundtrack, the original composer of the Miami Vice 80's series!

The DVD did not work. Tried this product in many different systems; laptops, DVD player, flat screen tv with dvd player, desktop computer. None of these played the product. Every time the DVD was played the same "ERROR: MISSING DATA" would come up. I cleaned all the DVD player heads but no changes. DVD would not play at all.
