Side-scrolling shooters are a dying breed these days. Back in the day though, shooters like Gradius were the bomb. The first game on the NES here is an impressive predecessor to a series that would see releases on the SNES and Playstation 2. This introduction to the series features what makes the series famous... powering up your ship. Basically the object is to shoot as many enemies as you can, but also to power up your ships defenses and weaponry. You can speed up or save your power ups to get a missile, increase your weapon power and mount defenses around your ship. It's a tough game, but that's what shooters are all about. It'll make you want to play it more, and as a result you'll remember everything you need to know to get through each stage without losing a life. Gradius is a fun classic, but it's definitely not the best in the series, which in my opinion was Gradius 3 on the SNES.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I just finished playing this game for the first time. Aside from the fact that I am a retro video game collector and enthusiast, I had heard a lot of good things about this game up there in the legendary status as far as shooters go for the NES. Well, the gameplay is quite fun. I mean, it is a Konami game so I was expecting a lot. The music and sound effects are great (aside from the fact that sometimes the sound effects can't quite play over the music) and it's quite a challenge. You will have plenty of enemies thrown at you and you'll often have to make split second decisions, though like most space style shooters like this one, you play one level over enough times, you'll start to memorize certain things which will make your job easier. I know back in the old days games were a lot harder than they are today, especially on the NES. There is hard and then there's NES hard... that's all well and good but after playing the first level a number of times, I was unable to beat it. You get to this point in the level where two volcanos?... shoot rocks at you from either side varying in height. It's no doubt a pattern I have to get down, though very tough for simply a first level. I however am not throwing the game under the bus because of that. I shall trudge on and try again. But for around $10 here on eBay, you really can't go wrong. I happen to be a pretty big fan of the shooter genre, but if you just want a game to pass the time, I would definitely think about picking this one up.Vollständige Rezension lesen

I owned this game 20 years ago and gave it away to my nephew. I have wanted it back ever since. Thankfully, I was able to purchase another copy from ebay. The game is a nice NES space shooter with plenty of power-ups and boss ships to defeat. If you are a fan of this game genre, then you need to pick up Gradius. Its only drawback (minor) is its difficulty in spots. It gets downright crazy busy in some stages with fire coming at you from all angles. Be prepared for a fight.
