In the early 1900s California, young Tom Tiflin (Peter Miles) does not have very happy parents (Myrna Loy and Shepperd Strudwick), but he has two great friends: Billy (Robert Mitchum), who plays the farmhand on the family ranch and his grandfather (Louis Calhern), who loves to talk about bringing settlers west. And the best thing that happens to this young boy is a gift from his father, the red pony title character, Gallaban, whom Tom Tiflin dearly loves and with the help of his friend Billy tames the pony and prepares it to be ridden. The relationship of Billy and Tom is the heart of the story, while the unhappiness of the parents (Dad wants to live in the city; Mom wants to stay on her family ranch)is one of the minor conflicts in the movie. This story is based on three of John Steinbeck's short stories. It is lovingly scored by Aaron Copland and directed by Lewis Milestone and plays in color. There were no Academy Awards and no great reviews. But it is a great ode to growing up and is appropriate for children except for one gruesome scene involving buzzards. (Please turn your head.) There are cameos by Margaret Hamilton (the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz) and Beau Bridges as one of Tom's childhood friends. (This movie was made in 1949). It is also nice to see Robert Mitchum in a nice role since he is so often the villain ("Cape Fear" and "The Night of the Hunter" and others). He especially plays the part of Billy well and has top billing with Myrna Loy. There are no subtitles to this DVD and no Special Features--just the movie.Vollständige Rezension lesen
My 4 year old loves cowboy stories. We saw this movie on a cable channel that shows old movies and he was fascinated. It's hard to find a good, clean language, western in the current market. The story involved and little boy on a farm, that made it even more interesting to a child. Loved It!
The Red Pony is faithful to the novel, in large part, no doubt, because the script was written by Steinbeck. If you're looking for a realistic portrayal -here it is.
