The fourth game in Activision and Neversoft's seminal skateboarding series is designed to bring additions and refinements to the already polished gameplay that's made Tony Hawk's Pro Skater one of the most important video game franchises of its time. Many of these improvements are in line with advances made in earlier THPS sequels, while others may come as a surprise to longtime fans of the series. Environments are designed to seem even larger and more interactive in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, with less worry over time limits and more emphasis on exploration. The game also adds new tricks to the pro skaters' repertoires, allowing huge, point-packed combos. The transitional "spine transfer" allows skaters to string together lines of multiple big-air tricks. Players can pop off of moving cars and other interactive elements of the game's diverse levels with new finesse. Perhaps the biggest departure from the winning format established in earlier titles is in THPS4's Career mode. Instead of speeding through timed runs to complete discrete mission goals, as in previous releases, objectives in this game are further integrated and delivered in the context of the levels themselves. Free of conventional time limits, pro skaters can explore each environment more thoroughly, stopping to talk with the many characters they meet. It's often these NPC characters who will assign the level goals, allowing for more personal, role-playing-style motivations and rewards. A well-stocked skate shop offers a place for the pros to spend their hard-earned cash and an assortment of mini-games brings variety to the basic gameplay. As in earlier versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, this 2002 release also includes editing modes that allow gamers to customize their own skater avatars and design their own skate parks.

One of the best in the Tony Hawk series
If it seems like my reviews are biased it's probably because most of the games I buy on eBay are my favorites from the past. :-) Tony Hawk 4 is a great skateboarding game. It's probably the second best in the Hawk series, behind the third game. Some notable additions include the ability to do one-button switches while on a rail or lip, the ability to stop your skateboarder to look around, COMBO goals, and an in-game store to buy new characters, areas, and cheats (tip: buy the slo-mo cheat right away; it will help with the super hard goals). You can set custom restart points to instantly warp to, which is very useful if you fall off a building that was really hard to get on top of. Restarting goals is also very easy. Most of the game is identical to other Tony Hawk titles. You take on ... Most of the game is identical to other Tony Hawk titles. You take on short missions and try to earn points by chaining various tricks together in long combos. The music, graphics, controls, and gameplay are nearly perfect. You can even create your own skater or skate park. The only real downside is that the game can become brutally difficult in later areas and requires a lot of trial and error. Some of the pro challenges are nearly impossible. If you are a fan of the Tony Hawk games you should definitely check this one out (for PS2, Xbox, or GameCube). Casual gamers might be turned off by the sometimes unforgiving gameplay.

Very fun game!
THPS 4 has it all. The single player career mode is a blast to play through. The old days of the 2 minute time limits to complete your in game tasks are gone. Now you have unlimited time to complete a much larger number of tasks and goals...and they aren't boring at all. The game not only includes high scores and finding the letters of the word "skate" that were so prominent in past THPS titles, but also incorporates new and creative goals that you might not imagine. The graphics are good, the music is good, and the secret characters are also very interesting...and weird if you ask me. The two-player games keep the competition rolling with horse and graffiti and some other types of scenarios. Creating your own skate park is an excellent way to show some ... THPS 4 has it all.
