I was looking for an inexpensive hand held GPS unit to use for business ventures and to use while hiking in the mountains. I sought a Summit Unit after discovering that my brother already had one and a co-worker also had one and loved it. Since purchasing my eTrex Summit I have used it on vacation to determine the distance from home, our traveling speed and general direction of travel. I have also used it to record coordinate locations for work. I like the feature of an electronic compass and the versatility of the unit. It can be calibrated for elevation, longitude and latitude location etc. What I dislike about it is that the elevations are very suspect. I have calibrated the unit to a know elevation and then travel 30 miles away to another known elevation and the unit elevation is off by 20 to 60 feet. That is not a large difference when you are climbing a mountain, but I would have expected the elevation date to be a little better than that.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I purchased a Garmin Etrex hand held GPS receiver several weeks ago. I have found that this receiver is easy to use and has a good amount of features. This GPS receiver has proved to be accurate to within 16ft or less. Features of the receiver are its ability to track up to 12 satellite channels, the ability to mark 500 waypoints, automatic track log, route navigation of up to 50 waypoints, trip computer which displays speed, average speed, maximum speed, direction, bearing, elevation, sunrise and sunset, and trip time and trip odometer. Other features are long battery life up to at least 12 hrs. uses two AA batteries. Easy to read display with the ability to change back lighting settings. Easy but sometimes cumbersome push button navigation of all onscreen menus, this however gets easier the more you use the unit. In short this is a excellent value for those seeking an inexpensive Hand held GPS unit which features the basics for GPS navigation.Vollständige Rezension lesen
It takes a few minutes to get enough satellites to work. I have used it in some hilly areas with a canopy of trees, in those conditions the accuracy drops to about 35' - 40', in open areas the reported accuracy is as low as 6'. I have estimated my walking speed at 17 minutes to a mile and the device reported an average speed of 3.5 mph, pretty good. So far I have used it only on relatively flat terrain and probably never will use it in any seriously hilly areas so the altitude reporting is of minimal interest. It is a kick. If you walk much, you would enjoy one.

I purchased a factory refurbished Garmin eTrex Summit hand held GPS receiver. The main reason I chose this model was for the price and features it had. This GPS will be used for geocaching and not for navigation in a vehicle. You could use it for driving off road but it does not have any street map type of navigation so you would need to set way points in order to navigate. I bought the refurbished model over a used one due to the fact that the refurbished model had a full 1 year factory warranty. Upon receiving the refurbished unit I could not tell it apart from a brand new one. It came with just a wrist strap and an instruction manual so I had to make an additional purchase of a data cable in order to download cache site from the internet. You can also program in coordinates instead of downloading them but I preferred the ease of downloading them with a data cable. I have used this unit several times and it is very accurate and can still pick up satellite signals in some areas where my fellow geocachers cannot get a signal. Bottom line is that I found this model to be a very good buy with a lot of features for the money. I am very happy with it.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Easy to use, picks up satalites quickly, even in the house. only four function buttons, easy for one hand opperation. I was told by a freind that the summit was simple to use and he was right. I bought it used and it still works good, I got a good deal for $54.00.
